Lots of coughing here as the cold is getting its claws into me. We went to Walgreen's this afternoon to buy some cough/expectorant medication, as all of the medicines of that sort in the house are well past their expiration dates. (I need to pay attention to one of the "turn in old medicine" days so we can safely dispose of all that junk.)

Tomorrow, SFSFC has a board meeting in the Bay Area. I'll be participating via Skype, and thus not infecting anyone.

I'm keeping myself housebound by cough while I don't have any external commitments - hoping it will clear before Monday, or even tomorrow...here's fellow feeling across the continents.

I've been meaning to ask, what happened to the fire brigade tax increase request?

It lost. So did every other measure on the ballot that would have benefited local services, including roads and city services. Probably not that surprisingly for an area that voted 2/3 for Trump, the people here are apparently deeply opposed to any guv'mint at all and are content to let their buildings burn down and their roads fall apart, because tax money is just "wasted" by the guv'mint.

Glum. Not feeling very optimistic about people and their education at the moment.

Coincidentally, I'm reading How Paris Became Paris, which among other things relates how Paris became the first city to have a meaningful network of street lights. Almost immediately the obvious benefits showed: lower nighttime crime rates, easier movement of citizens around their city, and increased economic activity because businesses were able to stay open later. It was also the beginning of years of complaints about the cost of candles.
