If you need to saddle staple something, but don't have a saddle stapler, there is a cheat. You can open up a regular stapler and staple down into some foam or foamcore. This gets the staple through the paper, anywhere you want, but doesn't fold the ends. You then flip the document over and hand fold the staple with a flat screwdriver or butter knife. Not something you'd want to do for a large run, but it does work in a pinch.
