My experience is they wouldn't *let* me use a hyphen; which I find deeply offensive. It's a *part of my name*. People would object to usernames not being able to contain the letter "w", wouldn't they? A lot? (In particular, it's the part of my name most often got wrong, that I've spent the most time forcing people to fix.)
