The disappearing gun carriage seen here, known as the "Buffington-Crozier" type, was designed by William Crozier, one of the US delegates to the Hague Peace Conference of 1899, and later responsible for the adoption of the Gantt Chart. In 1894 they cost fifty thousand dollars apiece.
