Westercon Business Report: Tempe Wins for 2017

The Westercon Business Meeting on Saturday morning of Westercon 68 started off with the results of Site Selection. As expected (but not guaranteed, as we know from past experience), the unopposed bid for Tempe AZ won the right to host Westercon 70 in 2017. I mislaid my copy of Progress Report Zero and therefore will get more information later and update the Westercon.org web site.

We also had a piece of new business for the first time in several years. The Westercon Business Meeting quorum (the minimum number of members that must be present to do business) has been 15 members for many years. In many years, it has been a challenge to get fifteen people to show up. We did eventually get to fifteen this morning about five minutes after 11. (That's okay; we were still getting the camera equipment ready to roll, given that we got the room less than ten minutes before scheduled start.) Because of this, after we dealt with site selection business, the meeting considered a motion to reduce the quorum to ten members. (Other numbers were proposed between 7 and 11; 10 was the number adopted.) This change is a constitutional amendment and is passed on to Portland's Westercon next year for ratification.

After the meeting itself (which didn't last long), we had the rest of the hour available to shoot footage for the Introduction to Business Meeting Procedures video. This went pretty well. Now I hope I can get the editing done relatively quickly. I think I'm going to have to transfer it all to my old XP machine and do it in the older version of MovieMaker, because the Win7 version of MovieMaker is awful. All of the functions I used to use are gone, and the "simplified" interface is missing all of the controls I used. I'll get it done. I want the video to be something I can post to YouTube in advance of Worldcon.
