I fail to see where the "accepted wisdom" comes from, I've always suspected (and that suspicion was borne out by Conzilla) that a Supporting Membership is a net gain for the convention. For Conzilla, a supporting membership was $30 and the cost per member for publications, badges, etc came to approximately $8.84.
