While taking a bus once from Phoenix to Fort Worth via northern New Mexico, I observed that the lie of the country was shallow slopes downward from east to west, punctuated by periodic sharp breaks where the land would rise up again in a cliff. The other notable feature of the region was the prevalence of little "teapot" oil refineries, collecting from the "nodding donkeys" in the district.
