17 Years

Lisa and I were married on this date in 1996, aboard a chartered vintage trolley running on Portland's light rail system. (Therefore, we don't know precisely where we actually were married, just that it was somewhere along Burnside outbound toward Gresham.) Because the place we wanted to have dinner to celebrate is closed on Sunday, we observed the anniversary yesterday, going in to John Ascuaga's Nugget to have dinner at Restaurante Orozko, their Basque-themed restaurant, where I had the seafood paella and Lisa had the seafood pasta, both of which, along with the calamari and mushroom appetizers, left us much too full for dessert.

The Ascuga family has, alas, decided to sell the Nugget to a New York casino management company. Although the announcement has all of the nice soft words about no layoffs or changes, we rather expect that once the transaction closes, the new owners will gut the place, close the places we liked, and otherwise turn the place into a clone of their other properties. Consequently, we hope to go there as much as we can the next few months to make what may be final visits to some of our favorite restaurants in the Reno-Sparks area.

Because of the dinner expedition (and being in our nicer outfits), we did not get our major grocery shopping done, so this afternoon we'll return to Reno to do so. But that also gives us a chance to go to John's Oyster Bar and have their shrimp pan roast again.
