Surprise Tree Removal
On Sunday, people came to the vacant lot to the west of Fernley House and cut down nearly all of the trees on the lot, including most of those along the fence that separates our house from that lot.

They left one tree standing. I think possibly they decided it was mostly on my side of the fence.

I don't generally take pictures of this side of the house, so I don't have any "before" pictures at hand to which you can compare this.

There are other photos in this set that show that they were cutting all of the trees, not just those on the my side of the property.

Here's a short panoramic video.
These were not the nicest trees in the world, and indeed, Lisa and I have had some concerns about the brushy trees being a fire hazard. We have from time to time gone out and trimmed some of the worst of the low-level brush, and Lisa has also had to cut the high limbs when they started banging against the house. On the other hand, they did provide some shade in the summer along the west side of the house, and a slight bit of extra privacy screening.
We don't know why the trees were cut down. There was a real estate agent here a year or two ago hawking this lot as a place to build a 4-plex or 6-plex, which seemed optimistic to me, but maybe that's what's happened here. Alternatively, the owner may have had the lot cited as a fire hazard and decided to just clear-cut it.
