That's a defensive/"can't do anything about it" response to a request for information :-) but understandable ... and of course GAS meant I had to suggest it. I will say that having returned to the site now, that second level of menu is really not designed to draw the eye and even knowing it is there I find my eye sliding past ...

If you can get a profile of pages visited (even a simple page count of the access logs), you can see if "membership list" is indeed a popular page, and if so, add it to the Quick Links on the right hand side of the front page.

In any case, this might be best addressed by an FAQ page, again possibly linked from under Quick Links.

I think the Membership/Registration issue is not helped by having the current Quick Links say "Buy a membership" but the top level menu saying "Registration". And I'd never have thought for looking for "Publications" under "Registration" :-)

For Eastercon we went with "Membership" with "Join Now!", "Membership Services", "Membership List" and "Dealers" (I'm sure it makes sense to have Dealer memberships under "Membership"!)

(that's the latest version of this, I originally chose this design and modded it for Eastercon 2007, and it's been used by Eastercon2008, Redemption'09 and now Eastercon 2010)

In the design stage we didn't know how many Sections/pages we'd eventually want, so went for the list down the side rather than being restricted to a screen width ... and then we had to find words as short as possible for the left hand menu (and that's why a lot of it is in lower case, they are narrower letters!)

And we had to make some compromises due to browser rendering bugs/features between IE and other browsers.

We even tested it on mobile browsers to make sure it would still work well enough ... and deliberately chose to avoid javascript etc. to keep it clean, accessible and workable on different platforms.
