Limited Connectivity

Air travel went about as smoothly as I could have expected short of a business-class upgrade. I got three Economy Plus seats in the middle of the plane to myself, and managed to sort-of sleep for several hours of the flight, and am thus not particularly jet-lagged. My personal internet connectivity is severely limited, however, consisting mostly of what I can scrape off the occasional free connections here and there, so don't expect to hear much from me until I get back late on October 30.

Are you in the UK?

If so, you might want to walk into a 3 shop (that's the mobile network 3). They sell pre-paid data SIMs for piss-all by American standards. A 3G USB stick will set you back £20, plus £10 for 1Gb of data (expires if unused after 30 days). A mifi router can be had on pre-pay for £70, and 12Gb of data expiring after 12 months costs another £70. Nor do you have to get the SIM activated -- it works right out of the box as soon as you put the SIM in the wireless device and turn it on.

Break-even for a 3G USB stick against hotel wifi charges (usually £15 per 24 hours) is typically 48 hours ...
