Boycott Week Over

The one week "Boycott Meta" event ended yesterday. As expected, I had a fair number of backed up messages when I logged back in, but nothing critical as far as I could tell. I was a little worried when I saw a message waiting on the Hugo Awards FB page, but it was just a scammer running the same sort of scam I've seen many times on various pages I run.

I've been boycotting Meta since FB first emerged from a gleam in Zuck's eye. People encouraged me to join back then, and I said no.

Consequently perhaps I should not be worried that I never even heard of this one-week boycott, though news about Meta does often cross my eye.

I have people I'm friends with IRL and on FB etc, who keep talking about not tolerating Zuck's stuff and leaving or boycotting. In over 15 years, I've built several communities there, some of which only now exist on FB, that I'm not willing to give up. OTOH, I provided so little data and some trickery when I signed up that I've *never* had advertising aimed appropriately at me there. I only log in from a VPN and other ways protected laptop, I only use a specific email ONLY for FB, so there is a limit to what they are gleaning from me. If I could find a way to have the groups I have built over these years hosted elsewhere, I'd do it, but that would take having everyone move to a new platform. I don't know about you, I'm tired of new platforms and learning about them and not being able to have groups and the people signed up, be able to support one another when they need it most. I miss the dial up days, but that too had issues.

I'm glad you stood up for yourself. I will always stand up for groups that need it.

I started the Meta boycott, but couldn't do it more than a couple of days. Out-of-town family was coming in and seemed to only want to communicate via Messenger, plus I am participating in a concert in a few months which is being set up entirely on Facebook. They have changed the concert attire and venue and have been posting the links to the music in pieces, so I was afraid of missing vital information if I continued in my personal boycott.
