Sport

I did watch the Big Game, and was, like many, surprised by how one-sided it was. I couldn't really get into it, having no dog in the fight, but as I don't have television and am not paying for any of the services that would get me the various cable sports services, this was the only gridiron game I saw all season.

Of more interest to me is that the COVID-delayed Australian Open tennis tournament started today (Monday morning Melbourne time), and much of it is available for free on ESPN3, so I'll get a chance to watch some tennis. Some of it is more likely to be on replay, sitting over on my personal computer in the background while I do my Day Jobbe; however, since we upgraded to much better internet connectivity last year, I have enough bandwidth to do so.

Follow the Bouncing Balls

I've been following the Australian Open tennis as my time permits and as ESPN3 (the free online channel) permits. As we near the end of the tournament, the only feed I've been able to watch is the "multi-cam" replay of the previous days feature match. This is a feed that shows the main coverage in the center of the screen, with two picture-in-picture shots focused on the players. This would ordinarily be okay, but for some reason, the two player feeds are running about one second ahead of the main feed. That ruins the show for me, because it makes the player feeds effectively "spoilers." It was so distracting that I've tapes pieces of cardboard on my monitor covering up the player feeds, so I can watch the main feed in peace.

Family Business

I'm in Yuba City today, having come down here last night. I have some business that has to be transacted at the actual bank where I have my account (I'm closing a safe deposit box that I no longer use before the box renews for another year). Then I head home via Dobbins to visit my mother for a short time before rushing home in time, I hope, to attend a Worldcon 76 division heads meeting.

Despite not setting an alarm and being up rather late (by my standards) last night, I woke up only about an hour later than usual. But that means I get to watch the conclusion of the Wimbledon Djokovic-Nadal tennis semi-final suspended by curfew last night. I might be able to see the women's final as well if this first match doesn't go like the marathon yesterday. (What is it about Isner and marathon Wimbledon matches?)

Time for Tennis

I've never played tennis, but I do like to watch it. It's time once again for the Australian Open, which also doubles as a two-week infomercial for why one should visit Australia. Mind you, it's high summer there, so even if I were to win one of the contests to attend the tournament (I do enter; you can't win if you don't play), I'd have to take it somewhat carefully. But for now, I'm tossing more logs on the fire and watching as much of the tennis as my internet connection and WatchESPN (and my working schedule, which sends me off to bed pretty early most nights) will allow.

No Fooling

I'm not very good at April Fool's Hoaxes, in part because people take me so seriously.

Not an exciting weekend here, which is just fine with me. I had breakfast at the Wigwam (but did not win it back this time; easy come, easy go) and came home to watch the Miami Open WTA tennis. Later today, Lisa and I hope to take advantage of good weather to get started on a home-improvement project that has waited for the weather to stay above freezing and for which we bought more concrete a few days ago.

That's a new icon, prompted by how often I've been having breakfast at the Wigwam. The backdrop is my tote bag from the 2009 World Fantasy Convention in San José, which has given me excellent service and has traveled the world with me as my miscellaneous tote for many years now.

Way to Go, Roger!

While in Reno yesterday afternoon, I put down a $20 bet on Roger Federer to win the Australian Open men's singles title against Rafael Nadal. Odds on Roger to win had opened at even, but by the time I placed my bed he was a slight underdog at +115, meaning every $1 bet would pay $1.15. Thus my $20 bed would pay $43 should Federer win.

I set the alarm for 12:30 AM and went to bed as early as I could manage, because I wanted to see the match live. I think that, given Roger and Rafa's ages and relative points in their careers, this is pretty likely the last time we'll see the two of them matched against each other in a grand slam final.

It was a good match, going back and forth, with neither player really showing dominance. Nadal has had the edge on Federer for some time now, but I had a feeling that Roger was going to make the magic happen one more time. When each player's concentration slipped in the third and fourth sets, the match went to a decisive fifth set. I admit to having my faith waver a bit when Roger lost his server early in the final set, particularly because it would mean he'd have to break Nadal twice to win the match (there being no tie-breaker in the decisive set at the Australian Open), but Roger did manage to come back and win the final set and thus the match. It was certainly a much closer match overall than the women's final the previous night between the Williams sisters.

Roger Federer has now extended his record of the most grand slam titles (18). He sort of sounded like he was saying, "If this is my last trip here, thank you all for the journey."

Thus ends another Australian Open and thus I can get back to a more normal sleep schedule. I did put in a bunch of entries for a contest to win a trip to next year's tournament. I know it's mid-summer and crowded and hot, but I'd still like to go, particularly if someone else is paying for it!

The next time I am in Reno, I will go collect my $43 winning ticket from the Atlantis. As a coda to my good fortune gambling, this morning I won my breakfast from the Wigwam Restaurant/Casino again, using a free-play coupon and not being greedy when my winnings from the $10 free play totaled the $14 I'd paid for breakfast.

That's $20 Saved

It turned out that the Atlantis (but not the Peppermill) was taking bets on the Australian Open. It is, however, just as well that I didn't go take a flyer on Milos Raonic, as Nadal took him out in the quarterfinal. So despite the top 3 seeded players knocked out, there is still the possibility of a Nadal-Federer final. On the women's side, it's three out of four women from the USA, and the possibility that the Williams sisters will face each other in a grand slam final again. Should be some great matches coming up.

Ouch

I've been joking that I've been watching so much Australian Open tennis that I've developed tennis elbow, but unfortunately it's not completely a joke. I've got a very sore right elbow, probably from spending too much time at the computer.

But speaking of tennis, when Lisa and I went to Reno today to do the rest of the grocery shopping we didn't get done earlier in the week, we stopped to have dinner at the Peppermill. After dinner, I inquired of their sports book if they were offering bets on the tennis. They were not. (The Atlantis had offered wagers on the tournament a couple of years ago.) I had been considering putting down a small wager on Milos Raonic to win the tournament, especially when he's now that highest-ranked player in his half of the draw what with Novak Djokovic unexpectedly going out in the second round. I've a soft spot for Milos, in part because I reckon I've been physically closer to him than any other top-ranked player. That's because when he won the very last SAP Open in San Jose, he all but climbed over me (I'd been upgraded to front-row seats) when he won to get to his player's box where his parents had come down from Canada; it was, I think the first tournament he'd won where his parents were there to see it in person.) I was not, however, interested enough to go over to the Atlantis, as by the time we were done with dinner, it was getting late and we needed to finish our shopping and go home and batten down the hatches for the next storm, which is expected to arrive in a couple of hours as I write this.

Follow the Bouncing Balls

It's Australian Open time again, and I'm watching as much of the tournament as I can, which isn't as much as I would like, because I do have to get sleep. But I'm enjoying what I've been able to see. I also sign up for the contests that include a trip to next year's Australian open, since you can't win if you don't enter.

Night and Day

I find that I can put on the replay of the night session (starts at Midnight Pacific time if watched live) of the Australian Open in the background while I'm working, and then watch the day session (4 PM PT start) in the evening, without fretting over missing something.

The Australian Open is the only one of the major tennis tournaments with three closable roofs, and they've needed it today as the early days' heat was replaced with rain.

Australian Open Time Again

A good thing about being home these two weeks is that I can watch the Australian Open coverage on WatchESPN. That's also the bad thing, because it leads me to stay up too late watching matches. So far, our serviceable-but-not-spectacular DSL service is managing to deliver the tennis from Melbourne. I did also sign up for the Tennis Channel sweepstakes for a trip for two to Melbourne for next year's Open. I think I'd really enjoy a trip to Melbourne that didn't see me spending nearly all of the time there dealing with a Worldcon and a Worldcon bid.

Sportsball Sunday

I started my Sportsball Sunday by watching the Australian Open men's tennis final on delay from Australia. (I was far too exhausted and sick to get up at 12:30 AM to watch it live. The replay concluded conveniently in time for the live-streaming coverage of the Super Bowl. (Lisa said she wouldn't have minded my going somewhere to watch it if necessary, but it was available online.) Both games had more on the line for me than usual, as I had decided to put down small bets on them when we were at the Atlantis on Saturday.

I won one bet and lost the other. Unfortunately, the win on one bet didn't cover the loss on the other, but it's still better than having nothing left over. I burned the losing ticket (might as well get some use out of it) and will cash the winner when we go back into Reno later this week.

I'm not as sick as I was last night, but I'm still not 100%. Being able to sit and do very little today was very helpful. I prepared a self-consciously Man Cave spread for the game: pickled eggs, cocktail wieners, sliced cheese, pickles, salami, and crackers. After the game, Lisa came in and said, "Well, after your Big Game Feast, what would you like for dinner: Pepto-Bismoll or Tums?"

Extended Tourism Commercial

It's Australian Open time again, which is the Tennis grand slam whose matches happen at times actually convenient for me to watch, with the day sessions starting at 4 PM Pacific and the night sessions available on replay when I get up in the morning. I can run the night session replay as background on my other monitor while working. And working I was today. Other people get today as a holiday, but my company does not do so, and I was beavering away on a database project that had to be done by 2 PM. (I did make it.)

The Aussie Open is of course an ongoing commercial for Tourism Melbourne, with lots of lovely shots of the city. Not that I need encouragement to visit Australia again. I just need the money and time. Still, I can dream and put in my entries for the Tennis Channel contest that includes round-trip airfare for two to Melbourne, four days hotel accommodation in the Melbourne area, and admission to the first two days of the tournament next year. Hey, someone has to win!

Dreams of Bouncing Balls

I rarely remember my dreams, but this morning I awoke to one that was strangely vivid and somewhat head-scratching, so I'm going to see if I can get the details down before I do forget it.

Eventually one too many implausibilities... )

So, playing an exhibition set at the Australian Open on one of the three show courts against Jimmy Connors, I could believe. That I could win a game against him when I've never actually played tennis in my life was my flying snowman moment and was sufficiently implausible that it woke me up. Oh, well, I needed to get packing to drive to the Bay Area today anyway.

Following the Bouncing Balls

I'm mostly too busy to pay hugely close attention to it, but thanks to the internet I have been able to watch a number of the matches from the Australian Open, including some amazing upset matches. Although sometimes it seems like the whole point of having 128 players in the draw is so that the 1 and 2 seeds can play a match, other times, like this year, you see that you play the matches to find out who is better that day, not who is better on the average, which is what the ranking tells you.

The SAP Open Final (In More Ways Than One)

Today was the final day of the final SAP Open (originally the Pacific Coast Championship) tennis tournament, bringing to an end 125 years of top-class tennis in the Bay Area. (The tournament has apparently been sold to South American interests, and as only an ATP 250 event — grand slams are 2000, major events 1000, and mid-grade tournaments 500 — it had become increasingly difficult to get the top players to turn up in the Bay Area.

For the only day I've been able to attend, I wasn't wrung out and exhausted from lack of sleep before I got there, as I was able to sleep in this morning before catching light rail downtown and walking to the Shark Tank for the 1 PM start of play.

A good day of tennis, and personally a great day )

As I left the arena, I got a Twitter direct message (DM) from @SAPOpen informing me that I'd won a signed item as part of one of the various things I'd entered, and that if I'd send them my address, they'd send it to me. However, since they don't follow me, my DM back to them bounced. (I'm unsure if they were thinking this through.) I tried to find someone with the tournament to see if there was anything I could do about it now — after all, if the promotions people were still around, I could save them the trouble of mailing it — but nobody I could find knew anything about it. I complained about it in public on my own Twitter and got another DM from them with the e-mail address of the person I needed to contact with my address, so all is good.

Because the tournament ended around 6 PM instead of close to midnight, I didn't have to leave early or dash 1.5 km to catch the last or nearly-last train back to my apartment, and instead was able to easily and without panic ride back home.

I'm sad that the tournament is ending, but looking at the turnout, I can see why the sponsors saw no future in it. Attendance was lackluster, even at the final, and I always had plenty of room to spread out. (Even when I got upgraded, but that's because I got two seats even though I only needed one.) I'm very glad I got to see the tournament at least once. This was my first experiencing seeing professional tennis live, and I really enjoyed it.

Strike the Set

I spent much of today helping move more stuff out of the RetroDome Theatre and take it over to the warehouse where they are storing things until they get a new home. This was a great deal of work, and I said I was glad I don't do it as my Day Jobbe, but I was happy again to help. I snapped a few photos along the way, and if any of them turn out, I'll post them later.

I couldn't stay until The Bitter End because I had a ticket to the SAP Open tonight, and, covered with drywall dust and dirt and what-have-you, I needed to get back the apartment and shower and change before catching light rail downtown. I got to see a very entertaining exhibition match about which I hope to have enough energy to write tomorrow. In the meanwhile, I'm just glad that for the first time in over a week, I don't have to get up at 6 AM or earlier.

In less good news, while i was walking home from the light rail station, idly chewing a food bar, I forgot that I had a temporary crown on the right side of my mouth and managed to break it. I didn't swallow it, but the crown popped off. I cleaned off the largest piece and carefully put it back into place, but now I have to make due until Monday morning, when I hope that my dentist isn't taking President's Day off.

More Tennis

My camera-phone isn't really the best for taking high-speed action shots of tennis, and I have been making an effort to travel light to the games so that I don't have to have a bag for the security people to search, so these are the only photos that turned out from the past two days.

Tennis photos, anyone? )

Quarter-final matches tonight, with Hewitt/Matosevic trying to follow up on their upset win over the Bryan Brothers. I'm not likely to be able to watch that one, however, as I'm apt to fall asleep and it's likely to be after Midnight before the match finishes. (The last train leaves at 12:25 AM and even that one leaves me 1.5 km short of home, although the weather is so fine today that this isn't an issue.)

Traffic, Teeth, Tennis

I had an early-morning dentist appointment in Redwood Shores, so I was up at 5:30 AM to I would be sure to be able to get there in plenty of time, which I did, arriving over an hour early. But I'm sure that had I left 30 minutes later, I would have been late — traffic was already slowing as I worked my way north from San Jose at 6:30 AM.

I've now had the chipped tooth ground down and measured for a gold crown, which might end up being a little visible as it's the bicuspid forward of the molars, although not directly forward-facing. I prefer gold on a crown because it's so durable and non-reactive. There's a temporary crown in place until the permanent one comes back from the lab next month.

If I thought the morning traffic was bad, it was nothing compared to the afternoon drive, which I heard one of the KCBS traffic reporters describe as the worst traffic day she'd ever seen, and that's saying quite a lot. I have no idea what caused every freeway in the Bay Area to simultaneously freeze up, but in my case it took nearly 90 minutes to go twelve miles.

I got to the SAP open around 7:30 PM on light rail from my apartment, just as a third-set tie-breaker was being played to finish Lleyton Hewitt's singles match with Sam Querry. Querry won, but that wasn't the last we'd see of Hewitt, as it was back later than evening for the doubles match (partnered with Marinko Matosevic) against the #1 ranked Bryan Brothers. (Top seeded Milos Raonic defeated Michael Russell 6-3, 7-5 in the first evening-session match.) To my surprise, Hewitt/Matosevic took the Bryans the distance and won the "match tiebreaker" played in doubles matches these days to upset the top doubles seeds 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-7.

There was another doubles match to play, but it was after 10:30 PM and I have to work on Friday, so I headed back toward the light rail station. Rather than wait ten minutes for the train at San Fernando station, I "cut across" to Santa Clara, but that just meant I ended up catching the same Civic Center-bound light rail train I would have caught in the first place. That train unfortunately terminates one stop short of Gish, where I was going. I had the choice of waiting twelve minutes for the following Baypointe train or walking. I decided to walk. Google maps says it's 1.4 km. It was a draw, with me getting to Gish just as that following light rail train did. In the end, I walked 2.5 of the approximately 5 km between my apartment and the Shark Tank. Oh, well, it's good exercise.

Follow the Bouncing Ball

I headed down to the Shark Tank this evening for the second night of the last ever SAP Open Tennis tournament in San Jose. I was concerned about being late, but apparently the day session had run very long, so even though I was about 45 minutes late, they were only just introducing the players for the first match.

Good seats, then better ones )

Verdasco seemed to be trying hard, but Symczek was on fire, making shots and getting lucky a couple of times — I saw a serve hit the line and go careening off randomly, for instance — and the underdog will find himself in the Top 100 next Monday, as he defeated Verdasco 6-3, 6-3.

That's a great start to my tennis week. The only problem is getting enough sleep to do this and also get my Day Jobbe done.
