So Close and Yet So Far

Unlike those people who proudly declare zero interest in sports, I am something of a sports fan, and today I had skin in the game, that is, the Super Bowl, where I had a bet on the San Francisco 49ers winning that only needed them to win by any number of points for me to win $85 on my $50 bet made several weeks ago.

Super Breakfast

I started the day with a big breakfast, partially cooked over the wood stove: mushroom-cheddar omelette, hot link sausages, and tater tots because I forgot to buy hash browns when I was at the store yesterday.

The game did not start until 3:30 PM, so I took care of other things during the day.

Super Eggs

Lisa made a dozen deviled eggs for me, which was very nice of her. I also made myself some chipotle bean dip and a few other things to eat during the game.

In case you didn't watch, it was a very tight game, one that the 49ers led for most of the game and that they might well have won if their kicker, who otherwise did quite well, had not missed an extra point. The game went to overtime. This was the first one since new rules affecting overtime games allowed both teams a minimum of one offensive possession. the 49ers got the ball first and ground their way downfield, but were held to just a field goal. The Kansas City Chiefs then got the ball, needing a touchdown to win, or a field goal to tie the game again, after which then next team to score would win. If the 49ers had been able force a turnover or the Chiefs were unable to score, the 49ers would have won.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, the Chiefs were able to drive 75 years and score a touchdown, winning the game and turning my bet ticket from William Will Sportsbook into waste paper.

Oh, well, I have to console myself with the money I bet having been "found money" from selling the one gold crown I remembered to claim from the dentist.

And now it's just a few days before pitchers and catchers report for baseball spring training.

I used to like the game more before all the concussion stuff came out. Now I'm like "ow" all the time.

(This isn't me making a judgment - now that they're informed, it's their call, all that. Besides, I'm the one who could never get over "they're making their pets fight" aspect of Pokémon, so.)

When I got home yesterday evening, B. informed me, "Taylor Swift won the Super Bowl."

It was a good game to watch. I have to admit that I was not up on the new overtime rules, so I was watching the clock tick down in the fifth quarter going "What the heck!"

But I am *so* looking forward to baseball.
