Unlike those people who proudly declare zero interest in sports, I am something of a sports fan, and today I had skin in the game, that is, the Super Bowl, where I had a bet on the San Francisco 49ers winning that only needed them to win by any number of points for me to win $85 on my $50 bet made several weeks ago.

Oh, well, I have to console myself with the money I bet having been "found money" from selling the one gold crown I remembered to claim from the dentist.

And now it's just a few days before pitchers and catchers report for baseball spring training.

The San Francisco 49ers, the #1 seed in the National Football Conference playoffs, had a little bit of a challenge taking on the #7 seed, the Green Bay packers.

I don't have television and was busy with Other Things when this game was going on, so I was able to watch the game highlights spoiler free.

Meanwhile, my replaced crowns still hurt, but not as bad as they did when they were installed last Tuesday.

Yesterday afternoon, I stopped by the Fernley Nugget casino to put down a sports bet. It took me a while to figure out how to get to the wager I wanted on the William Hill machine (they don't have a person here; if you want that, you have to go to Reno), and I felt bad about that after I realized that I was holding up another person. In any event, I did go ahead and spend the $50 I got for the old gold crown on a bet for the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl at +170. That means my $50 bet will win $135 if the 49ers win.

Of course, they'll have to first get past the Green Bay Packers and whoever wins the other divisional-round game this coming weekend. The 49ers are the odds-on favorite to go all the way. For example, the Packers are +3000 (bet $50 to win $1550).`

Crown Me

Today I went to the dentist to have the two replacement gold crowns fitted. When I was there two weeks ago for the removal of the second crown, I forgot to ask for them to give me the crown, and when I asked about it, they said they didn't have it. I wonder if they actually discard old gold dental work or just set it aside for a party fund or something like that.

Fitting the upper right replacement crown went smoothly. This is the tooth on which I had a root canal many years ago. The lower right tooth, which is still "live," was much more difficult, and I had to ask them to anesthetize it before they cleaned the tooth and fitted the permanent crown.

After the appointment, I went to Reno Gold Exchange to see what I could get for the crown that I did salvage.

Found Money )

That lower right tooth is still very temperature sensitive, and my jaw does still hurt a bit, although not as much as it did when I had the temporary crowns in place. The dentist said to give it a couple of days and if it hasn't "calmed down" to give them a call and they'll have another look at it.

That money for the crown is "found money" of a sort, and I'm considering if perhaps I should use it to place a bet on the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl. The last odds I heard for the 49ers to win were +175, meaning that my $50 bet would win $137.50 if they take the trophy.

We've been putting off some purchases from Big R Home & Ranch because the new Fernley store kept looking like it was closer and closer to opening, but we couldn't put off some of those things any longer and headed over to the Fallon store after work today. Apparently there has been a hitch with getting the building inspection done and there's some talk now that the Fernley store may not open until February. I guess that means we'll be getting our next trailer load of wood from Fallon. Pity. I would have thought that Fernley would be sufficiently desirous of getting the sales tax revenue that a new store in the old downtown district would generate that they would expedite things rather than slow them down.

Big R was out of a couple of things that we ended up getting from Lowe's in Fernley instead on the way home, and we made what I expect is our last trip to the grocery store before Thanksgiving. Scolari's grocery finally got ducks in stock; however, we got tired of waiting when we were in Reno last weekend and bought ours from Whole Foods. Mind you, if our Thanksgiving duck turns out well and Scolari's still has some ducks after the holiday, we'll probably pick up another one for later. Both Lisa and I like duck.

After dinner, we put in a good long walk down to the Fernley Nugget casino, and Lisa was able to play the Monkees slot machine there. (She was so disappointed when the Atlantis rotated that machine out; for all we know, this could be the exact same machine.) And so far, the Monkees have been very generous to us, as Lisa walked away with $25.75 more than the $20 with which she started. As has been her practice, she gave me everything above her original $20 stake, which was awfully generous of her. If only one more slot had filled on that last pull, the $25 win would probably have been a $250 or $500 win, but that's why it's called gambling.

I have some hope of getting away from work early tomorrow afternoon and running in to Reno. There are some things that if we can get there tomorrow, we won't have to brave the post-Thanksgiving shopping rush on Saturday to buy.

As I wrote at the time, shopping last weekend was very disappointing. Things went much better this weekend. We found a couple of pairs of secondhand jeans at Goodwill and Savers for Lisa that will serve just fine for around-the-house wear. We then went looking for the Levi's store, but the one in Reno has gone out of business. In the same shopping center, however, there was a Lucky Brand Jeans store that, wonder of wonders, had jeans in Lisa's desired size and cut that were also not made in China. (Until now, we've not been able to find anything that met all of those criteria; everything was either wrong cut, wrong size, or Chinese made.) They weren't black, but the dark blue will be okay, and they said they'd have black in stock later this year as it's a seasonal thing. The sales clerk also didn't treat Lisa as some sort of oddity for not being a size 0 or 2 and for not wanting pre-torn jeans covered in rhinestones or something like that. I don't think we'll be clothes shopping at the mall shops again anytime soon. The only drawback is that the jeans Lisa found, which look good on her and fit well, are pricey. They cost more than twice what my work slacks cost, for instance. We got one pair and will keep an eye out for special offers or sales in the future.

We had lunch at the Manhattan Deli at the Atlantis — many Renovation members probably remember this restaurant — and did non-perishable grocery shopping at Grocery Outlet. (The electric ice chest is pending repairs that Lisa expects to make before we leave for Westercon.) Then it was over to the Nugget for the monthly Lightning Loot drawings (we didn't win) and dinner at the Oyster Bar, where the staff (particularly William, the water and bread server) once again remembered us. I even managed to mark a winning Keno ticket (for a net win of $6, but that's better than usual). The Lightning Loot drawing has a woman dressed as "Lady Luck," and we chatted with her before one of the drawings, telling her that we like costumes and such as part of our involvement with SF conventions. She said she liked SF/F too, and seemed disappointed that she hadn't heard about the World Science Fiction Convention having been right there in Reno last year.

So this weekend saw us spending a lot of money, but it was mostly for things we needed, and none of it seemed wasted. We got home pretty late, however, and I was beat by the time I got to bed sometime close to 1 AM.

Last night, Lisa and I went into Reno-Sparks for New Year's Eve celebrations. We thought we'd try the Atlantis for their buffet, but when we saw the queue stretching back down the corridor out into to the casino, we balked and went over to the Nugget, where we'd initially stopped and where there was no queue. Mind you, the Nugget's buffet isn't really all that great, but we made the best of it.

How We Spent Our NYE )

We'll probably go back into Reno this evening to do our main weekly shopping, but we also plan to be back at the Nugget again tonight, because there is one more $10K drawing tonight and the entries we earned yesterday roll over into today. We know my name was in the mix, and if you don't show up, you can't win. We certainly could use the money. I also think it was considerate of the Nugget to schedule the first prize draw for shortly after midnight, as it meant the winner wouldn't have to pay the taxes until 2013.

...and plan on playing while you're at Worldcon, note that the Atlantis has an affinity program (as do all the major casinos these days). The Atlantis' program is called Club Paradise.

You can skip this if you don't plan on gambling at all )

If you don't plan on gambling, you can just skirt the edges of the casino while you come and go to your hotel room and the restaurants.
