Packing

Although I tried to take most of the material I will need to stage Match Game SF up to Oregon the last time I drove there, I unfortunately forgot the poster tube full of the large posters for the wall and for the front of the contestants' tables. I also meant to leave my folding luggage cart up there in Oregon so that Lisa could bring it along to Norwescon along with the other material. That makes it much easier moving stuff from our room to where we're staging the game. So now I have the poster tube that I'll have to take as my second checked bag, and after packing the remaining game material and the folding cart into my other bag, I find myself getting dangerously close to the 50 pound limit with some stuff still to go.

And on top of that I'll have my computer backpack containing one laptop and my briefcase with the other computer. (The second computer controls the sound effects for the game, assuming we actually have someone to operate it.)

Normally I've not minded checking my CPAP machine inside my luggage, but the weight is likely to be a problem. I'm considering taking the risk of carrying the CPAP along as a second personal bag and hoping that Alaska won't balk at me. I know TSA will allow the machine through -- it's just that Alaska's web site is vague on the subject.

Hey, we may be on the same flight! Alaska 355?

Yep, that's me. Seat 24C. I'm back on Sunday on flight 316, 4:55 PM.

How are you getting to the airport? If you're driving, could I split some costs with you? I do have my train ticket, but if you're going anyway, it would save me having to carry five pieces of luggage on the train with me. (I hope it will be only three coming back, assuming I can give two of them to Lisa.

I'll be taking Dave's car to the airport to park, he'll be picking it up when he flies back tonight to go to work on Friday, then park it again when he goes back up on Friday night. I'll have a car full of luggage, which isn't much in his vehicle. Wish I could help you out. I'll be sitting in front of you a few rows, so we'll see you at the airport. Dave drives my car up, I drive it back, which makes for an expensive convention.

Understood, no problem. Yeah, the logistics and car swapping are no fun at all.

Kevin have a safe trip to Seattle. Tomorrow, I will be on my way to Boston about this time.

The TSA is now treating CPAPs as if they were potential bombs. When I flew to Seattle, my bag got pulled both coming and going, and they wiped it down for explosives. There was a kindly TSA employee in Seattle who explained to me that they are now doing this to CPAPs where they did not do so in the past.

Ah, that explains why it got the inspection at Oakland.

Yeah, for some reason they've decided that CPAPs have to be swabbed. It's not really a big deal. I've figured out that I can use that time to repack my laptop, DVD player, and bag-o-toiletries; put my shoes back on...
