Home, With Battleship

We got out of Yuba City about 9:30 this morning and convoyed home, staying in touch between me in the Astro and Lisa in the Small Orange Pickup by ham radio. We took our time getting home, including stopping for breakfast in Marysville, coffee in Grass Valley, a leg-stretch at the Alpha-Omega overlook trail of CA-20, and a late lunch at the Peppermill in Reno before getting home around 4:30 or thereabouts.

The Peppermill lunch buffet was closed when we got there, so we tried the seafood restaurant and gave their version of shrimp pan roast a try. Never again. It wasn't as actively bad as the version at the Atlantis, but both of us were feeling uneasy with the dish sitting on our stomachs on the ride home. We'll stick with the Nugget Oyster Bar version as long as the new ownership there allows them to keep making it. (Given the other changes at the Nugget, we're concerned that they'll ruin the Oyster Bar too.)

After unloading our luggage and personal affects, we tried to rest a bit. Lisa lay down for a while and I ground my way through e-mail. Work caught up with me even on my day off and I had several hours of work to do this evening for the Day Jobbe. That's probably just as well because we have to go to Reno tomorrow afternoon for a car-repair issue, then again on Wednesday morning to take Lisa to the TMJ specialist, then probably again to retrieve the vehicle from the air-conditioner-repair place later in the week. I'll be working in the evenings, but I need to get ahead and did so by turning around a request tonight so I could actually start on the things I'm supposed to be doing tomorrow morning.

After getting some rest, Lisa came and got me and we unloaded the "battleship" desk and the various boxes from the Astro. It only took about twenty minutes, and Lisa was able to arrange things so there was still barely enough room to park the pickup when we were done. The desk is in a temporary location until she clears enough space from her workshop for us to install it. I also will need to clear out the drawers in the desk, which are still full of the filed papers from ConFrancisco and other stuff circa 1993.

Finally, we went over to Scolari's for a small grocery trip. We expect to do a larger one tomorrow after dropping the vehicle at the AC repair shop. (We'll be convoying in so that we can leave it with them for a few days.)

It was uncomfortably cold in the house when we got back, enough so that I had to light off the fireplace. And here we thought we were done with the fireplace for this season. Oh, well, we still have some firewood left, and we needed to either use up or move the remaining wood stacked on the front porch anyway.

Dust in the Wind(shield)

We did not rush out this morning, but we also got moving sooner than yesterday. After breakfast, we drove the pickup over to Marysville and the transfer station to dump the mattresses and other sundry junk. This went reasonably smoothly, and only cost the minimum $13.20 fee for the roughly 130 kg of stuff. We returned to the hotel, where I dropped Lisa off and headed for U-Haul fairly quickly because we were coming up on the 1 PM deadline for returning the truck and only paying for one day. Including a stop to put in a bit of fuel, I made it with two minutes to spare (and there was apparently a one hour grace period as well, so it wasn't quite that close). Lisa arrived at U-Haul just as I was getting the receipt for returning the truck.

Then it was back out to the locker for the third time this weekend. The battleship desk was already loaded into the minivan, so we just packed a few more boxes and odd bits around it. We also finally have enough room to start sorting things out into what we will eventually keep and eventually throw away. Lisa was also pleased to discover several boxes of books and other things that she thought we'd left in Mehama or otherwise lost. But wow, what a lot of dust there is in that locker! I'm glad that I've kept brooms and brushes there all along to try and dust things off enough to find out what is there, at least.

It's my guess that we have between 2 and 4 more minivan-loads of stuff remaining in the locker. It would be less, but most of the remaining boxes are odd-sized or have collapsed sufficiently under the weight of stuff over them that they're not going to stack easily. There will probably be one more trip to the dump to toss dead boxes and other junk we decide not to keep.

With my van completely full (our luggage will all go into Lisa's pickup tomorrow morning), we returned to the hotel. Later we got take-out food again and went for a long walk around Yuba City's neighborhoods, walking from our hotel near CA-99 clear down to Plumas Street and back, which was good exercise and more fun than knocking around all of those dusty boxes in the locker. We also refueled both our vehicles so we're set for the trip home.

Tomorrow morning (not too early), we'll head home to Fernley. In retrospect, we could have done this three-day job in two days, but it's a lot less stressful this way.

For the Best

It turned out that the BASFA Baseball Outing was called off and I didn't have tickets to the game tonight after all.

Oh, that's Bad. No, that's Good... )

Bad Vaudeville routines aside, the cancellation of the Giants outing meant that I could drop the final night of my hotel stay in Santa Clara and instead drive to Yuba City this afternoon (I was able to leave work at 1 PM after a company function in Fremont) instead of tomorrow morning having to be up at 4 AM after having taken the train back from AT&T Park after a Giants night game. (The hotel in YC is half the cost of the Candlewood Suites Santa Clara.)

Lisa and I left Fernley and Fremont at almost exactly the same time, with the effect being that she got to the hotel in Yuba City less than fifteen minutes after I checked in to the hotel. Tomorrow morning we'll go collect a rental pickup truck and get my nephew to help us extract the sofa from the locker and deliver it to my sister.

Errands in the Rain

Lisa was sufficiently fretful over being able to get to our assigned meeting place by Noon today and about the snow over Donner that she couldn't get to sleep last night and instead left at about 4 AM. The Small Orange Pickup has snow tires and 4WD and did not need chains even though R2 conditions were in force. (She says that she never actually engaged the 4WD but that the chain-up check point waved her through.) Accordingly, she got there more than two hours ahead of me. I was there just after Noon, delayed a bit by rain driving from Tracy and Lodi.) We dealt with our business (I'll say more about what that business was next week sometime when the paperwork matures) and went to the hotel to check in. It's the Holiday Inn Express Sacramento Convention Center, which once again completes another goal in the IHG Big Win promotion. (Only two more goals to go, which we'll complete in a multi-night stay near the end of April for the final Big Win bonus.)

After checking in to the hotel and moving my stuff either to the hotel room or to Lisa's pickup truck, we piled in to my van and went to Yuba City to evaluate the situation at my storage locker. We put another load of boxes into my van, bring the locker below 50%. Furthermore, it looks like the only thing left in the locker that won't fit in my van would be the sofa, which I've agreed to give to my sister. Lisa and I talked it over with my sister and nephew and decided that at the end of April, we'll come to Yuba City, rent a U-Haul pickup truck for a couple of days, and my nephew will help Kelli and me extract the sofa and take it to my sister's house. They'll have to bang on it with brooms and a vacuum cleaner for a while to make it usable again, but it should still be an improvement on what they currently have.

Lisa and I will spend the rest of that weekend deciding what to retain and what to discard and probably taking at least one load to the landfill — there is a derelict box spring & mattress set on which I slept for a year or so twenty years ago before moving everything into that locker, for instance, and a whole lot of empty boxes that I'd been stockpiling "just in case" and for which we now see very little likely future use. There's also a large heavy steel desk that Lisa wants for her workshop in the garage at Fernley House; however, it breaks down into pieces small enough to fit into the back of my minivan, so we can take it home with us. After that, it will only be a matter of time before I can get the last of the boxes out of the locker and close it out. I've had that locker now for nearly twenty years, as I opened it in 1994 when I first moved to the Bay Area. I hope to get it closed sometime this year and stop spending $60/month on storage space.

After a brief stop at my sister's house to discuss the plans for Moving Daze with her and her son, Lisa and I drove back to Sacramento. Lisa, who hadn't slept in about 36 hours, finally fell asleep, and as soon as we got back to the hotel, we got her tucked away to try and catch up on the missed sleep.

Welcome Home

We were up at 6 AM today, and the final packing out of the apartment went extremely smoothly. Lisa did a very good job getting boxes packed and finding ways to pack odd-sized-and-shaped items. I'm glad we had a couple of huge Ziploc bags, into which the afghans from my bed — handmade presents to me from my late grandmother that have been with me since I first moved out on my own — could be safely stowed. Including a move-out inspection from one of the staff, we left just after 10 AM. (They seemed pretty satisfied with how we'd returned the apartment to a fairly tidy state, although apparently no matter what we did, we will be charged for cleaning against my deposit. Ah, well, anything I get from the deposit is gravy, I reckon.) We did, however, have a number of errands in the area, including stopping for lunch, and it was closer to 3 PM when we headed out of Fremont. Including the usual rest/fuel stops at Lodi Junction and Colfax, and a small amount of groceries in Fernley proper, we got home just after 8 PM, which is really very good time for the inter-city portion of the trip. We unloaded our luggage and the boxed stuff, but the furniture, including the desk, can wait until tomorrow.

So it's completely official now: I turned in the keys in San José and now, for the first time in my life, I have no home at all in California. I have to wrap my head around "home" being Fernley. This isn't a complaint; it's just something very new for me.

Moving Daze: Good Intermission

Because the Amtrak California Zephyr is on a temporary schedule that runs three hours later than usual, Lisa and I didn't have to rush about to make an 8 AM train on Monday. Instead, we got up and had a leisurely breakfast at the Eldorado buffet, took her luggage back to her pickup, and made our way down to the Amtrak station where the CZ was running another hour later than the revised schedule. We met an expat Australian woman now living in Reno who had her father (they're both from Sydney) in for a visit, and we chatted amiably with them on the platform until the train came. I said goodbye to Lisa, who headed off quickly and didn't even see the train off. (She later explained that she was feeling as though she was almost completely out of power, having slept maybe five hours in the previous 60, and she still had to get groceries and head back to Fernley, so she had to get moving.)

By Train through the Sierra )

I really enjoyed the train trip, which was a nice restful end to an otherwise very stressful weekend of moving. There's one more high-stress period left, which is the final cleaning out of the Fremont apartment over the rest of this week. I feel a bit like I'm in Zeno's Paradox, for every time I fill up boxes of stuff and move them, there still seem to be as many boxes left to move, while the Atrium apartment (which has very little room) gets more and more full. I rather expect I'll end up having to use my van for overflow storage while I make more decisions about things I just can't keep down here and will either have to take to Nevada or throw away completely. I hope Lisa is able to haul some of it back in her pickup truck when she comes here this weekend.

Countdown to Move-Out: 2 Weekends

After lunch today, Lisa and I began unloading the rental truck. The early parts, closer to the door, weren't so bad, as they were mostly boxes and/or odd-sized but manageable like floor lamps, poster tubes, and the like. But the Big Stuff was Not Fun.

Curse you, Queen Bed )

I do very much hope tomorrow is a nice quiet train ride back to the Bay Area. This weekend has had too much drama for me.

Moving Daze: Indifferent End

When I started the rental truck in Sparks, I could see that I was down to less than one-eighth of a tank of gas, but figured that I should be able get out to Fernley and we could refuel there, where gas is substantially cheaper.

That Darn Engine Light Came Back )

Lisa had me go ahead and pull the truck around to the garage on the other side of the property, as many of the boxes will be stored there initially. I was too tired to do anything else after a much too long, much more eventful day than I wanted. At that point, all I wanted was sleep, which was what I got.

Moving Daze: Bad Middle

Getting moving just before 11 AM, I called my sister and mother to tell them (and my nephew) that I didn't expect to be in Sutter before 2, since I needed to go first to the storage locker and drop off some things there to make room for the stuff coming from my grandfather's house. I set off north in a cheerful mood, as everything seemed to be going to plan.

Then the Truck Broke Down )

Lisa and I didn't win the $10,000 drawing, but getting the truck to Nevada in one piece probably used up most of my luck anyway. After the drawing, we went to the Oyster Bar for pan roast. I was relieved to be there.

Moving Daze: Good Start

Those of you who follow my Twitter feed know a fair bit of the story I'm going to be posting here, but here it comes for the record. It's long enough that I'll be posting it in multiple parts.

The BASFA Displacement Committee Cometh )

The BASFA Displacement Committee did a fantastic job, moving the entire contents marked for removal in only about 90 minutes. I thanked them all, offered everyone their pick of things from the shelves in the kitchen with stuff that I'm not moving and will discard if not claimed, and was able to get the truck buttoned up and ready to go before 11 AM, more than an hour before I'd originally hoped. (In retrospect, I was to need that time desperately.) Thank you, everyone!

As people left, they wished me a safe trip. I thanked them and hoped for an uneventful journey. Unfortunately, that wasn't going to be the case, but that's another story to follow shortly.

Keep On Truckin'

To my great relief, one of the small number of "pull through" parking spaces in my (soon to be ex-) apartment complex was available when I returned with the rental truck. Must have been around 5 km to the rental place, and it's a pretty warm day. Glad I don't have to do a whole lot more work tonight other than seal up some of these boxes.

While inspecting the truck before signing off on it, I extended the ramp and paced off the distance from the end of the ramp to the doors. That gives me the distance I have to pull forward of the most likely exit from the apartment complex so that people bringing stuff out have the minimum distance to get to the truck ramp. Unfortunately, the exit from the complex doesn't have a handicapped-access ramp; there's a straight curb. Annoying, that.

Lights Out (Gas, Too)

The arrival of my current PG&E bill reminded me that I needed to schedule turning off the utilities at my apartment, which I did. I do very much hope they don't expect me to be there when they do this on May 1. They don't need access to the apartment (the meters are on the side of the building), so all they need is to get through the gate, and there's sufficient traffic into the complex that tailgating someone else should be sufficient.

Marking Time

I'm just about at the point where I can do no more packing until I'm actually ready to leave for good. There are lots of boxes, most marked with blue tape (meaning they go on the moving truck for Fernley) and a few not so marked (meaning they go to the new apartment). I'd originally expected to spend this week shuttling back and forth between here and San Jose, but now it just looks like I'll spend tonight and tomorrow here in Fremont. Next week, with all of the furniture gone except my work desk (which I'll have to disassemble and move to San Jose on Tuesday or Wednesday), all that will be left is to move my small remaining personal stuff out and get ready to do the clean up with Lisa the following weekend.

Countdown to Move-Out: 4 Weekends

This weekend included errand running (see previous entries) and more packing.

Tearing Down the House )

Last weekend, while Lisa and I were running shopping errands in Reno, my nephew called to tell me that the closing-out of my late grandfather's house is mostly done now, and that they've excavated to the point where the rest of my comics collection (which was buried beneath mountains of other material) was now ready to be picked up, along with a desk that I didn't even know that I had there. We agreed that I'd come and get it on the afternoon of April 21, the big Moving Daze.

Revised Moving Daze Plan for weekend of April 21 )

I know I've accomplished a lot here, but it still keeps looking like there's an incredible amount of work to do, with stuff strewn hither and yon. I'll feel much better once I have possession of the new apartment and can start moving the stuff that isn't being stored or moved to Fernley. I'll have a little over a week of that (including next weekend), which will create a different kind of problem, but I'll deal with that when it gets here.

Countdown to Move-Out: 5 Weekends

I made it to Fernley without incident yesterday. I'm now looking nervously at the weather forecast. There's a 100% chance of snow today over Donner with "accumulations of up to 6 cm" forecast. Tomorrow there's a lesser chance of snow, and I'm hoping that I can get over the top tomorrow without having to chain up.

This morning, I unloaded the van with what may be the final van-load of stuff I move up here to Fernley before the move is done. Looking at the calendar, I may not be able to come up here next weekend. The Wednesday after that is the day I take possession of the new apartment. The days after that will have me moving stuff from Fremont to San Jose daily, with particular emphasis on the weekend. (That reminds me that I need to start the wheels turning on getting internet access at the new place.) The weekend after that is Heavy Lifting Days, where I'll move the large furniture to Fernley along with whatever else I can fit into the moving van. The weekend after that is Cleanup, where Lisa is planning on coming down to help me clean the Fremont apartment prior to turning the keys in to the owner.

Once I take possession of the new place — a furnished studio that will be like living in a long-stay hotel — I'll be able to make some final decisions about what can or should stay in the Bay Area and what will have to go to Fernley. There's a chance that I might decide to upgrade the moving truck from the small to the medium size. Also, I need to remember to take the rope and hand truck from here in Fernley back with me if Lisa will let me. OTOH, Lisa needs that hand truck to move bottles of propane to the propane place down the road. Decisions, decisions....

Countdown to Move-Out: 6 Weekends

As I was out quite late last night attending a birthday party, I slept in today and haven't gone outside at all. I've done some packing, putting away a bunch of the stuff in the bathrooms of this apartment and realizing that I probably won't have to buy soap or shampoo for ten years, assuming the stuff I have doesn't dry up before I get around to using it. There was a lot of stuff pushed to the back of the cupboards that I'd completely forgotten about.

Also on tap: gathering together expired medications and bagging them up to take to a local pharmacy in the hope that they'll accept them for safe disposition, rather than just dumping them into the trash where they can get into the water eventually.

I boxed up most of SFSFC's corporate papers into a couple of bankers boxes, and will try to fob them off onto one of the corporation's other officers because I don't feel quite right transporting things like the corporate seal out of state. I can come and get them back after I've moved and have a better idea of how much room I'll have for such things.

I've also reserved a 10-foot moving truck — I'm hoping I've calculated correctly that it is sufficient for the two sofas, one entertainment center, and one queen bed — and am going to see about reserving my train ride back on the Monday following this round of Moving Daze on April 21-22.

Missed Opportunities

While confirming a points rebate on my Priority Club account, I discovered that I'd not realized that Budget was a partner with Priority Club. Had I realized this, I could have used their discount code for 20% off the cost of the two moving truck rentals (thus saving over $200) and earned maybe as much as 5000 PC points (about one-third of a free night at the less-expensive Express locations). No retroactive credit or discount is available, however. Phooey! I was so focused on getting the move done that I forgot to check for discounts and point opportunities.

Too Much Work, Too Little Time

It has been an excessively interesting day, but if I'm going to get any sleep tonight, I won't be able to write about it in the detail it deserves.

Lisa spent more than six hours working on the Big Orange Van, replacing a kinked fuel tank vent hose and a split fuel line, and at one point briefly set the van's engine on fire. (Fortunately, she has a small halon-type extinguisher and no harm was done.) While the vehicle still needs lots of work, at least it's moving again. Because of how badly beat-up her hands got after that, she's postponed work on the small pickup for a few days.

We took the rental van into Reno and closed out the Moana Lane storage locker. Turns out they refund the unused rental days, so I'm only actually out a few extra days' rent and the $10 key deposit for having lost the original key. We pulled everything out and hauled it to Fernley. The garage/workshop is now looking very full of boxes. I'm glad we had the rental truck for this because I don't think we could have fit the locker's entire contents into my van, even with all the seats but the two forward ones removed.

Finally getting back to the trailer in Fernley, I checked the train status, and as of late Tuesday night, it was still looking like my 8:36 AM train out of Reno would be here about that time. Seeing me fret over schedules, Lisa suggested that we go into Reno, drop off the rental truck at the Budget night drop, and spend the night at Circus Circus, which is walking distance from the Amtrak station. This option looked even better after I called CC Reno and found they were offering $32 rates. We packed up again and Lisa and I convoyed into Reno. I got the rental truck dropped in the last available night space, we went to CC Reno, had a very annoying experience getting Security to let the Big Orange Van into the over-height vehicle lot, and after checking in to the room went for a late dinner at the Eldorado.

And believe it or not, the above really is the digest version. Good night!

Halfway There: No Drama Today

We set off from the hotel in Sublimity this morning with no drama at all. We confirmed that the running lights still worked. Even with a bunch of stops, we made good time. Indeed, after we refueled at Chemult, I realized that we might even show up at Klamath Falls too early and not be able to check in. Lisa proposed that we stop at the Collier Memorial State Park Logging Museum. I readily agreed, as I've wanted to visit there every time I've passed it but never had the time. Today, we had the time, and we spent about two hours at the museum.

Tourism while moving )

Technically, we could probably have pushed hard and driven the entire 500-plus miles to Fernley today, but I think we would have been dangerously exhausted had we tried it. As it was, I had to ask Lisa to drive us from Oakridge to Chemult because I found myself starting to fall asleep at the wheel on OR-58 this morning. Taking the trip in two 250-mile relatively easy chunks is safer. And besides, I have the Priority Club points; I should use them for something useful like a nice comfortable hotel room.
