The UV here Down Under is extremely strong (hence our correspondingly high melanoma rate), so I'm not surprised you got burned in Oz.
It's always so odd to hear Americans talking about going to Europe when they mean the UK. There are very few British people who identify as Europeans. EU membership does not a European make!
