Snow Crash

Despite my having rekindled the fireplace last night, it was still cold this morning (around 15°C), and with Kayla having run me off my feet over the past few days, I had to call an audible and take an extra day of time off to get more sleep. Instead of my usual 4:30 AM wake-up call, I slept until about 10:30 AM.

Snow Time in the Pah Rahs )

I collected mail from the post office (I had a call slip for an oversize item) and bought a small amount of groceries. I also had breakfast at the Black Bear Diner (for a bit of a change). I spent some time today doing catch-up like entering last week's paycheck into Quicken, but there is a whole lot more to do, complicated by having to work in two different currencies. I'll get it done; it just will take a couple of days, and my mind is not working at 100% right now.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
We had lots of time this morning, so I could have a nice leisurely included breakfast before catching the shuttle over to the airport.

Hotels, Airports, and Snow in Reno )

I collected accumulated mail (I'll look at it tomorrow) and got the fireplace restarted, as the snow follwed me home and was starting to fall harder as I unloaded the minivan. It will take a while to warm things up. Lisa is holed up in the travel trailer, as I'm on quarantine for a few days until she's sure I haven't brought home any bugs from the conference. To be fair, I can't say as I blame her.

See Kayla's journal for more of the inside story of us traveling on the Transgender Day of Visibility.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
This morning, when I looked out the front door, I got a surprise.

Snow in March? )

By the end of the work day, all of the snow had melted, and the day continued chilly, but otherwise dry. I'm glad we still have plenty of firewood.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Last night, I woke up in the wee hours of the morning and had a look out the front door. The forecast snow had arrived, a few hours later than originally predicted.

Light Snow Day )

This was the first precipitation of note in about a month. Yes, Fernley is on the edge of the Forty Mile Desert, but much of what precipitation we get is in the form of snow. Last year around this time, we got the largest fall I can remember since we moved here in 2011: 40 cm in one night. This winter we have near-drought conditions, and it's worrisome. We need lots of snow in the Sierra Nevada, for Fernley's water ultimately depend on the Truckee River, which flows out of Lake Tahoe through Reno/Sparks and into Pyramid Lake, with a considerable amount siphoned into the Truckee Canal, which feeds much of Fernley's groundwater supply.

First Fall

It was cold last night, but I did not realize how cold until I ran out to do an errand this morning.

Sign of Things to Come )

There was light rain last night locally. It won't be long before I need to restart the fireplace.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Yes, I know summer doesn't start in the northern hemisphere until June 20, but Memorial Day is typically considered the "ceremonial" beginning of summer, so I checked to see if the snow on the mountains had made it this far.

Yep, it did )

I know from when I went to Reno on Saturday that there is still quite a bit of snow visible in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and there was at least one ski resort up there (Olympic Valley) that was open yesterday for their final day of operations for the season.

Lake Tahoe is full, which is great news for our water supply here this year, as Fernley's aquifer is ultimately dependent upon water from Lake Tahoe via the Truckee River and the Truckee Canal.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Although we didn't get any rain or snow here in Fernley, it wasn't far away.

More Spring Snow )

I-80 over Donner Summit was closed most of last night. Snow reached the western edge of Reno. Here in Fernley, all we got was wind and a lot of it. It was pretty cold wind as well. Temperatures got to near freezing, and between the wind and cold, neither Lisa nor I felt like tackling more of the yard work.

The wind did slacken off just enough this morning that I could run over to get some milk and other perishables without feeling like the Rolling Stone was going to be blown off the road. Also, for a short time this afternoon, Lisa and I could sit on the (slightly sheltered) front porch watching birds making their way back to the feeder. However, it was not long before the cold drove us back indoors. If it stays this cold any longer, I'm going to have the restart the fireplace again.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
We had a run of nice spring-like weather this week, but as expected, it turned colder and started raining last night. Lisa and I got out for a walk just before the rain started falling in earnest. There was no snow here overnight, but it got close.

A Light Dusting )

It was cold enough here to need to get the fireplace going again.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Yesterday, as predicted, temperatures tumbled off a cliff and went below freezing overnight. We even got some snow, although it didn't stick; it just turned to slush. Fortunately, I got most of it off the porch before it froze overnight.

I was able to restart the fireplace yesterday morning and stave off the cold. There was also a lot of wind, which meant that when Lisa and I tried to do a few walks around the block after dinner, we faced bitterly cold wind blowing little pebbly snow. We only achieved two laps before we gave up and went back inside to thaw out.

Tomorrow looks more promising. Maybe we can get back to Reno and do the rest of the shopping we had planned. If we are there during the right hours, we might try to try playing Who Wants to be a Billionaire again, too. But I won't drive farther west than Gold Ranch. When the snow hits the Sierra, they sometimes end up closing I-80 westbound at Gold Ranch. While that's Nevada Exit 1, in order for it to show up in California's road conditions system correctly, Caltrans calls it California Exit 205.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
It got just barely cold enough last night for the rain to turn into a little bit of snow.

Still )

Yesterday afternoon, Lisa and I went to Lowe's price what a ladder long enough to reach the upper roof would cost. It's not cheap. Lisa will also need to dig out the safety harness and the rope we used on the house in Mehama, and will need to figure a way to get a line over the roof so that we can tie it to a tree on the opposite side of the house. Only then will Lisa feel secure in going up there and fixing the join and probably making other corrections to that gutter.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
The storm that came through overnight was forecast to have a fair bit of rain and a slight chance of snow at our level (4000 ft / 1220 m) and that's exactly what we got.

Slush and Snow )

This is certainly a spring-like weather pattern. It's rarely getting below freezing, but it's still chilly enough for me to the keep the fireplace burning on most days. We may have a few days' break this coming week, with another storm behind that. Except for that one large storm (which we think was the largest snow accumulation we've had in one 24 hour period since we moved here in 2011), it's been a fairly mild winter here in Fernley. Fortunately, lots of snow has fallen in the mountains, which is good for our water supply.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
My Day Jobbe hours for the past few days have had me awake as early at 2 AM, but I didn't look outside this morning, or else I might have seen a tiny bit of snow here, or at least that's what the weather forecast said to expect. In any event, later in the morning, I saw that that we had snow to the north of us.

Light Late Season Snow )

Today was supposed to be the last day that I'll have to be up at 2 AM to support my department's European operations. The hours have been getting to me and I dropped into bed shortly after 2 PM today for several hours. Getting up at 4:30 AM (my usual schedule) is likely to seem like sleeping in.
kevin_standlee: Fernley House and the East Lot covered with about 10 cm of accumulated snow (Snow Day 2)
As predicted, we got snow here in Fernley, in two waves: one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Neither were very large, especially compared to the hammering that they got in the Sierra Nevada.

Snow Days )

Aside from the brief trip to the shops and walking over to the Wigwam, I stayed home this weekend, kept the fireplace well stoked, and otherwise didn't do very much. Given how stressed I've been for the past few weeks, not having a lot to do was a good thing.

By the time the bad weather than hammered California reached us in Fernley, it only produced some wet snow overnight.

Nothing Like the January Storm )

By early afternoon, the paved surfaces had mostly cleared, and what was on the porch was sufficiently slushy that I could sweep it off before it re-froze.

We continue to try and claw our way back to a once-a-month schedule with an episode about how the railways handle snow.

Appropriately, as I was editing this episode this afternoon and evening, it started snowing, dropping wet snow, but again only 3-4 cm. The weather forecast is such is that I expect that most of it will melt tomorrow.

No disclaimers on this post. As far as I know, Worldcon Intellectual Property has not asserted any right to control my railroad videos or to punish me for talking about rotary snowplows.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
It did snow overnight, but only about 2-3 cm rather than ten times that amount in the big storm in January.

Snow Pictures )

This afternoon, the snow turned to rain, which led to lots of slush. There may be more snow tonight, but it doesn't look like it should be much to worry about. Unlike California, we didn't get much wind either, for which we're grateful.

I still do not regret laying in supplies. They don't go to waste, and they make us more secure. Instead of worrying about the weather, we could shoot the studio version of the next Railway Legends, Myths, and Stories.
kevin_standlee: (Snow Day)
Temperatures are now staying above freezing for longer. Yesterday evening we had some cold rain, but that just accelerated the snow melting from the roof of the house and garage. This made quite a racket for a while, but by today, the rooftop snow was gone.

The Retreating Snow )

The current forecast shows no snow expected until next weekend at the earliest. I don't expect all of our snow here to be gone by then, because sheltered areas and places where we shoveled snow to get it out of the way will not have had time to melt, but most of it should be gone by the time more arrives.
kevin_standlee: Fernley House and the East Lot covered with about 10 cm of accumulated snow (Snow Day 2)
The snowfall is over, but the snow is still with us, thanks to below-freezing temperatures.

The Cleanup Continues )

The weather forecast is for a chance of rain and/or snow showers for the next couple of days, then a slight warming trend next week, with temperatures forecast to go as high as +11° C, which will presumably cause this snow to start melting. However, overnight lows will still be below freezing, so there will be lots of ice with which to contend.

Driving is still challenging, as the snow has turned mostly to ice, and the DOT has not been able to scrape it all away, presumably because things like Interstate 80 are more important. I hope things are better next Tuesday, when I have a dentist appointment in Reno.
kevin_standlee: Fernley House and the East Lot covered with about 10 cm of accumulated snow (Snow Day 2)
The weather forecast I saw online predicted that we would get about 4 cm of snow last night.

How About more like 40? )

I'm not sure, but I think that this is the second-largest snowfall we've had in a single storm since we moved here in 2011. There was one storm that dropped more, and it was followed by several more storms without a warm spell, so the snow accumulated quite a bit. Yes, this is still nothing compared to people in the Midwest or Northeast who get really big storms, but 40 cm of snow in one night is quite a bit by our standards.
kevin_standlee: Fernley House and the East Lot covered with about 10 cm of accumulated snow (Snow Day 2)
That wasn't a very big snow storm, but it did leave about 3 cm on the ground here in Fernley. It was bigger in the mountains, where chain controls over I-80 reached from the western edge of Reno all the way down to Colfax overnight. Today was clear but cold, so lots of snow did not melt.

Nice Winter Day )

Lisa offered to make spaghetti if I could go get some ground beef, so late in the afternoon I gingerly coaxed the Rolling Stone over to Grocery Outlet. That's how I learned that the main roads, including Interstate 80, were clear. Parking lots, however, were another matter, and I took it very carefully getting out of the store's ice-and-snow-covered lot with no mishap.

I count myself lucky that I don't have to do a lot of traveling.
