Because of where PDX is located, it's faster to leave PDX and head north on I-5 to Kelso then cross over the Longview bridge than it would be to grind through Portland traffic. Also, Lisa hates trying to fuel the van in Oregon, because the required service station attendants cannot fuel her van without spilling gas, so she wanted to refuel in Washington. (They have a farm fuel tank at home, so most of the time she refuels the van herself from home.) We could also go down to the ferry, but it only runs once an hour, and I hadn't checked the schedule ahead of time, so we didn't want to risk it.
