That does remind me of my attempt to revisit the ranch near Mendocino where I lived when I was eleven. I too was unhappy there in many respects, but I loved the countryside. I didn't dare return for nearly 40 years, but when I did I found the ranch sold and a new locked gate across the access road. But I did see enough of the countryside - I walked the two miles down the dirt road from town, as I often did while living there - to bring back memories.
