I would never have tried to put you off the sleeper since you're so enthusiastic about trains, but yes, it's both an expensive and an uncomfortable way to get to Scotland. When my business partner was working in London but living in Scotland she used a get an all-business class flight that took less than an hour for a fraction of the cost of the sleeper. However, at least you've checked another train off your list. Lisa is right that the tracks would be better upgraded, but I wouldn't hold my breath there. Even the journey from London down to the Eurostar tunnel is extremely slow due to the track. The fast European trains, let alone the Japanese ones, are but a dream.
