On the spur of the moment, I decided to buy a ticket to Wednesday night's Giants game. It's the last home game of the season, and the Giants were out of contention by the All-Star break, but hey, they're trying to do their job as "spoiler," (so it's not like they're sleepwalking through these games) and there is a chance, if his injured toe relents sufficiently to let him hobble on to the field to play for an inning or so, that I'll get to see Barry Bonds play his final home game as a Giant -- or possibly ever, if he can't find anyone willing to pay what he wants to be paid for next season.

(Actually, I think some AL team will fork over the money for Bonds as a DH to play out the string.)

I heard rumblings about him crossing the bay, but I don't think he's the A's type. He also wants to win next year, and I don't see that happening in Oakland. Goddess forbid, he goes to the Angels or the damnYankees.

If I had to place a bet, my money would be on the Angels. As I recall, he moved to Southern California a while back anyway, and the Angels may look like a team that could win a World Series, something he seems to really want before he retires.

Given that the Giants-with-Barry were, what, six outs away from winning the Series against the Angels once, it would be highly ironic if Bonds gets a ring playing for the Angels of Anaheim.

I'm tempted to do the same, for the same reason.

I'm sure he'll play next year. If you haven't already, check out his farewell statement on barrybonds.com.

My theory is that with Barry Zito coming to this side of the Bay, the A's have a Barry deficit which they need to address. :-)

He has also been talking about fond memories of Pittsburgh...

I loathe the LA Angels of Anaheim with just a bit less fury than I despise the Anaheim Ducks (only ten thousand supernovae vs. imploding galactic core). I don't want to see him down south, but who else in the AL besides the damnYankees would take a chance on him?

I want to see how Lew Wolff could pull that out of his wallet and still beg for funds to build the new ballpark in Fremont. Still don't think any NL team will take a chance, and didn't his leaving the Pirates happen with bad feelings?

I think Bonds understands he won't be making the big bucks anymore. As for Lew - begging for funds to build a stadium is in every owner's job description - it has nothing to do with player salaries. The voters, bless their pointy little heads, will vote for a stadium, but never for hiring a player.

Yes, he left the Pirates in a huff, but he was no wizard of public relations here, either. Plus he's 15 years more mature, and owns a ton of titles and records he didn't have back then.

I think he won't be in baseball at all. He will retire. I am not sure any team wants him right now due to how the fans will react to him.

Hmm- I think I would maybe see Barry playing for the A's or maybe the Evil Empire (Yankees) is the only team with enough cash to get him. Maybe Texas ?????

Fans voted an asterisk to this post

As a long time Angel fan, I can tell you the general mood in Anaheim is that he can go play for the A's, we don't want or need him. Vlad and Garret Anderson are both at the point in their careers where they should DH 2 or 3 times a week, so there's no roster space for a full-time DH.

I'd say the most likely destinations are Texas or Chicago - The Rangers' GM needs to do something to make up for giving away Teixiera, and the White Sox just plain need to do something.
