It was a big deal just to add checking for ID's on Amtrak -- prior to that, as you know, you could just show up and hand them your ticket. I am amused with people who think it requires a lot of early checkin to take the train; I regularly talk to people who want to arrive at San Jose an hour early for an Amtrak train, as if they're going to the airport, "To make sure they have time to check in and board".
