I got away from Fernley just after noon, but because of the bad experience I had over Donner Summit my last trip westbound (the lanes have been split into two single westbound lanes while they work on rebuilding the road, causing massive backups), I decided to go via Carson City and South Lake Tahoe. This turns out to be somewhat longer both in distance and time. It's a lovely drive in places, but you have to pay closer attention; furthermore, there's enough two-lane sections that a nervous driver like me ends up with a tail of cars wanting to get around as soon as I can find a place to pull over. Also motorcycles. Lots of them, heading back from Street Vibrations in Sparks. The trip took me 9 1/2 hours. Bleah.

You went over US 50? Beautiful road. Try Carson Pass (CA 88) sometime when you're not time-pressed. I think it's the second prettiest road in California, after CA 253 from Boonville to Ukiah. Your van may not be the right vehicle tho. On the other hand, it might be OK since you're unlikely to have a bunch of people following you, or for that matter see anybody else at all.

I've driven the CA-88 route as well. I agree about how nice it is, but like US-50, I accumulated a tail of cars, even on that lightly-traveled route.
