In more pleasant news, the 2013 Hugo Award Nominations will be announced this coming weekend and The Hugo Awards Website will be covering it live. I'll be hosting CoverItLive coverage of the nomination announcements, which will be taking place live at four conventions in the USA and UK (Norwescon, Minicon, Marcon, and Eastercon). There will not be a video stream of the event, but as we get the results per category, we'll be posting them in the CIL event, and of course we'll have the full list up on the web site shortly afterwards.

The announcements start at 1 PM PDT Saturday (3 PM CDT/4 PM EDT/8 PM GMT). We'll be "on the air" with our coverage a few minutes before the results start rolling out. You can go to the event page and enter your e-mail to receive a reminder of the event.

(No, I won't be making a flying visit to the UK or even to Seattle — in my current condition, it's just as well — I'll be hosting the coverage from here in my living room, making the best to work with LoneStarCon 3 to get the word out in a coordinated fashion.)

Please make sure that the timeline for the packet is prominently given out. The more Beth has to spend time answering the question "when will the packet be out" the less time she has for putting it together.
-- One of Beth's minions on the packet team. I never realised before how emotionally awkward it is knowing the nominations ahead of the announcement.

You only have to keep it secret a few more days. And yes, someone has to know so that the magic can happen. Thanks for all the hard work of all the Awards People. We really appreciate it.

Aactually, no, there are things one has to keep secret for a lot longer, I think. That's whether someone has declined to accept nomination. As I said I've not been involved before so I'm not actually sure how secret this is kept, but to be on the safe side I won't reveal whether anyone declined a nomination for anything until and unless I see it announced by the administrator (either specifically or as part of a data package such as the detailed nomination breakdown).

Agreed. You need to wait for the formal announcement and the associated details. You can talk about that. Anything the Administrators don't release is supposed to be held back, possibly until the final results later this year.

Every year about this time we get people who look at the nominations and immediately demand to know how many nomination votes each nominee got and seem affronted that this isn't released until after the final results come out at Worldcon. I think that at best these people have seen final results before and have conflated that announcement with this one coming up this weekend.

Well, yeah. The hidden details will remain hidden. BUT the Nominations themselves, where all the Important Information is comes out later this week.
I look at the rest of it as bookkeeping, which will get released eventually, and I've learned patience. Then again, David Bratman is a friend of mine, and since he's admined the Awards a few times, I've gotten used to the "Don't Ask, I'm not allowed to tell" mentality, and thus patience.

I shall pass along whatever I'm told. And I understand the awkwardness, and don't like it myself. Two of the three times I was on the Hugo Administration Subcommittee, I didn't know the results in advance, because I told the others, "Don't tell me unless I need to know."

Thanks for the reminder. I look forward to following the announcement from the comfort of my home. ;)
