kevin_standlee: (Fernley House)

We did something today at Fernley House that we've never done before: sat out on our porch. (The porch is visible to my right in the icon photo.) It was pleasant this afternoon after I knocked off work, I wasn't dead to the world the way I've been much of the past week-plus, and Lisa was also somewhat mobile, although she, like I, is still coughing a lot. We got out two of the plastic patio chairs that have been with me since the days of the Pleasant Hill Slan Shack in South San Jose, cleaned them up, and spent a nice half hour or so sitting out on the porch of our house. Regrettably, no train came by to make it a perfect evening, but it was nice nonetheless.

Eventually, the sun started setting, and more surprisingly, mosquitoes began to appear, and we had to retire inside, but it was still a pleasant milestone in our house-owning experience.

Hope you did it with real class; y'know, sitting out front in your stocking feet, no shirt, just a wife-beater, drinking beer right out of the can. Anything to give the Church Lady a purple face...

Alas, I don't like beer and don't own a wife-beater. Worse, I was drinking a mug of tea.

I looked mostly like I do in the icon, right down to wearing that shirt, although I hadn't shaved for a couple of days. Also, I had slippers on because I don't want splinters in my feet from our porch.

Why do people insist on referring to an A-shirt by that singular dysphemism?

Ah, the joys of sitting on a front porch! Do you have neighbors who walk by and wave "hello?" One of the things that I find disturbing about home architecture in recent decades is the move from front porches to back decks, eliminating opportunities for neighborly interaction.

We haven't been out on the porch enough to tell, but there are neighbors, and some of them even go for walks the way Lisa and I do.

Since we have a street on both ends of our lot, our "back patio," such as it is, is in the middle of the property. Lisa has figured that we might be able to put a sauna there someday, which would be good against the winter cold.
