This afternoon, while I was walking through the Dealers' Room, a fellow in a Navy enlisted man's uniform came up to me and said, "Excuse me, sir, but are you actually in the Navy?"

At first, I thought he was poking a little fun at me, but it became clear that he was serious. The shortest version of what I said in reply was, "No; it is a civilian space-liner."

He said, "Okay," and showed his military ID, "You see, I really am in the Navy, and I needed to make sure I didn't have to salute you."

I think I should take this as a compliment to both the outfit and to the way I wear it.

"No; it is a civilian space-liner."

OW ow ow ow ow ow -- OMG, I can just *imagine* the look on his face when you said that.

Wonder if he actually *heard* "space-liner" or if he just translated that into something his brain could actually deal with :>.

Note to self: Put Kevin on the Do Not Drink Soda while reading list -- I almost fell out of my seat laughing :>

Captain Sir, it is a good job we were groundside. I'f we'd been on board the Armadillo and he hadn't saluted you I'd have had him tossed out of an airlock. Since the 2005 outrage we do carry a compliment of marines in case of space pirate attack, but they are subject to local disciple (which means you, Captain, sir) and if I catch them being uppity I keelhaul them, preferably while in hyperspace.
