Water Bill Update

Some of you reading this may recall that we found a leaking water main and fixed it a couple of months ago, and that we think it was probably leaking for a long time, but only when it got bad enough for water to come to the surface did we discover it. Our water bills had been running between 4000 and 5000 gallons/month, which seemed high to us as there's just the two of us and we don't have lawns to water. Yesterday I got the bill for the first full month after the leak was fixed: 2000 gallons. That's more like it.

Oh, good. That's consistent with the leak actually having been fixed.

What's that work out to in money, then? (How long 'till the reduced bill pays off the repair, I guess? Because after that, hell, that differential is as good as income.)

Oh, the savings will take many years to equal the cost of the repairs, as the bill went down by only about $10. Most of the water bill is a fixed cost, and the per-unit (a unit being 1 kilogallon, and yes, kgal is a stupid unit) cost is fairly small.

Oh, that's too bad. It'd be a bigger savings here, particularly since sewage is based on water draw, so you'd get double savings. Ah, well.

As for kilogallon as a unit? It could be worse. Ours is in CCF, hundred cubic feet, with C being the Roman number for 100 (centum). I understand that's pretty common but it's also really, really stupid.

Fixing leaks is important in these water short days. Even if you won't see the payback for ages.
And our water company uses CCF. I guess whatever volume system works.
