kevin_standlee: (WSFS Captain 2)

Earlier today, I had called to my attention a claim of someone on Wikipedia claiming to be a Hugo Award winner. Looking at the entry, it seemed implausible, so I put in a query against the user asking the user to prove the claim or withdraw it. (A moderator has since removed the claim pending verification.) This drew the ire of certain people who immediately challenged whether I was the person I claimed to be, and also in another venue took advantage of my having not remembered to update my Wikipedia user profile the last time I was re-elected to the WSFS MPC to presumably claim that I was assuming authority I don't have.

Not only is this me, but it's approximately the way I dressed while presiding over one of the WSFS Mark Protection Committee meetings last year in London, on account of I wore my WSFS captain's uniform from the 2005 Worldcon to the 2014 Worldcon Opening Ceremonies that were shortly before the MPC meeting. (And oboy do I need to lose weight.)

I've invited anyone questioning someone claiming to be me to contact the WSFS MPC or the current Worldcon to confirm my identity and position as an officer of the World Science Fiction Society.

I don't recall anyone ever falsely claiming to be a Hugo winner or finalist in the past. Considering how much disdain the person claimed to have for the Award, you have to wonder why the person would go to the effort to do so.

I never will understand the hating of an award you either want badly or worse, try to claim you have won.
Jealousy is a weird beast.

Why should it matter who you are? Just point to the official Hugo Awards site (knowing Wikipedia, better not to mention your connection to this) or the Locus site listing SFnal awards, both of which have authoritative accounts of the Hugos.

It's because I signed my name as Chairman of the WSFS Mark Protection Committee and pointed out that claiming to be a winner (or finalist) when you aren't is a infringement of WSFS's registered service mark.

It is also the case that facts are irrelevant on Wikipedia if you can find a way to cast aspersions on the character of the person stating them.

Yep. I stopped using Wikipedia last year in protest of the ludicrous manner the GamerGaters where allowed to write their version of history rather than letting anyone tell the truth. It's just boypedia now - the facts literally do not matter to much of the "management" of Wikipedia.

I'm not sure you could hide under a bushel. Under a passel of them, perhaps, but not just the one.

Speaking of Worldcon, did you want to compare notes on getting things off of your video camera and onto YouTube?

We appear to have it under control, although we need to be sure to have the P2 driver software installed on every machine we're going to use well in advance, on account of needing to cycle the five cards we have (each holds about 30 minutes) through the computers. For the quick uploads, we'll use the MP4s generated to the SD card. Ideally, we might even manage to have some of the early segments uploaded before the meeting ends, although that's dicey and I won't commit to it.

Ok. I had just noticed that the upload that I did seemed to have handled the video a bit more transparently than some of the conversions that I'd seen before, but that might just have been an artifact of picking the wrong conversion technique on your end. (For instance, it seemed like the aspect ratio was off. Of course, that would make folks look thinner, which few of us would object to. :) )

Yeah, Lisa has been having to experiment with settings to get things the way we want them. Thank you!
