Thanks to a generous co-worker taking over from me early, we were able to leave Fernley at 1:45 this afternoon, a bit more than an hour earlier than I originally planned. Lisa had been packing the minivan throughout the morning, so when I got the word that I could leave, all I had to do was shut down and pack away my computer, run through the secure-the-property checklist with Lisa, and we could go.

Lisa did the driving today, and that was good for me, because I was and am very tired. I even managed to doze a bit between Lovelock and Winnemucca.

Whirlwind

Just before Lovelock, we spotted a wannabe tornado. It actually had shrunk quite a bit by the time I got the camera on it.

We stopped in Winnemucca and had dinner at the restaurant in the Winner's Casino. This is the point where our road trip to the 2016 Worldcon diverged from the 2015 Worldcon, because we'd come this same route on the way to Spokane; however, one block from the Winner's Casino is the parting of the ways, as US-95 turns north here toward Idaho, while our route this year continues east.

On the Trail

At the Beowawe rest area on I-80, I got this shot of the territory through which the wagon trains bound for California rolled. Aside from this one brief rest stop, we kept the hammer down, as we had a lot of distance to cover today: about 350 miles to Wendover, at the Nevada border.

Rainbow Hotel Casino

The Rainbow at the end of Nevada is where we're staying tonight. It's a nice big room. Lisa says she'd like to have one like it for holding room parties at conventions.

Not Snow in August

While we were walking from the minivan to the hotel front desk to check in, we spotted the white accumulation on this and other vehicles in the parking lot. It's not snow, of course, but salt. With Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Wendover is full of vehicles and people tracking a lot of salt back to town. I can feel it in my eyes.

It's just as well that we started early, because we lose an hour coming to Wendover, inasmuch as they are on Mountain Time, sensibly enough, given that their clientele is mostly coming from the east. Fortunately, tomorrow's trip is shorter than today's, and so we can afford to start a bit late if necessary.

Hope the salt doesn't hurt your vehicle.

I look forward to your driving report next year. :-)

That would be quite a trick, wouldn't it? I think our longest road trip next year is to the Westercon in Tempe. We have tentative plans in place for that as well. The 2018 Westercon in the Denver area may, assuming San José wins the 2018 Worldcon so I have enough schedule slack to do it, give us the chance to swing south to ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway.

Ah, a "dust devil". I've seen several of those, but not recently. The California central valley farmlands, just north of the Tehachapi ridge, is a good place to find them.

We get lots of them in the Nevada desert, sometimes quite big ones.
