So apparently LiveJournal's owner has finally, ten years after buying the company, moved the data to their Russian servers. Whether this means they'll start interfering with content is unknown. I haven't decided whether to leave (in which case I'd move to Dreamwidth, since it's closest to LJ's system) yet. My life membership in LJ long since "paid out" and I'm sure that SUP (owner of LJ) wouldn't miss me, given that I was an inherited liability from when they bought the system from Six Apart, and they've had to provide me with paid membership rights without ever collecting any money from me.

Traffic on LJ surely has been quiet, though, given that some of my recent posts have made the top 25%, on some pretty trivial topics. I understood when I was being linked from [livejournal.com profile] grrm's LJ or mainstream media sources, but not posts about my mundane things like visiting railroad museums and the like.

I'm not surprised the railroad posts are popular. You go places most of us don't even know existed, and you know in depth what you're seeing there.

If you make the move, be sure to let me know how to find you.

I definitely will do so if I decide to make the move. I'd rather not do so. I'm very comfortable with LJ. It has IMO a better system than all of the other social-media platforms.

This was all news to me when I read it in your journal. I came here initially to read Jay's posts and over time began following others, but as you said it's become rather sparse here lately. Please consider sharing guidance if/when the time to move does come. (Is there a way to copy and move LJ posts?) Thanks.

As I understand it, Dreamwidth allows you to import your entire LiveJournal into it. I've not done it, though.

Yes, this is true. The journal and all comments on it.

I have found Dreamwidth a very congenial place, and it's easy to back up your journal over there and then begin to crosspost to both DW and LJ from the DW side until you make up your mind what to do.

Good luck and if you need any advice just holler.

I learned of your existence a couple of years ago because of File 770's coverage of the Hugos and have enjoyed all your posts since then. Thank you for being here. And if HERE becomes Dreamwidth, I'll follow you just as easily.

My Dreamwidth journal is called sterlinglikesilver.

I migrated to Dreamwidth years ago and it's super transparent to people who're still on Livejournal. The migration process was easy; setting up crossposting so that there'd be a single comments thread was a little fussier but not actually difficult.

If you migrate (which is something I am debating about doing, too), please share your username on the service. I do enjoy reading your posts, especially about the trains. (Even though I started following you for the Worldcon business meeting reports a couple of years ago.)

It's easy to post on Dreamwidth and cross-post here. I have journals in both places [there, I'm also melchar] - so if you cross over - I recommend keeping your same account name to minimize confusion.
