We had a tiny bit of snow today (maybe 1 cm), which melted by mid-morning. It made for a good train picture, though.

Trains and Snow at Fernley

Here's Amtrak #5, the westbound California Zephyr, passing through Fernley about 10:15 this morning. (When on time, it passes at about 7:45.) It was unlikely to make up any time because it was following a grain train and "riding the yellows" on their way to Sparks. Behind it you see a coal train waiting for the other trains to get out of the way so they could push their train of loaded coal hoppers back into the "Modoc Main" (the stub of the former Modoc line from Fernley to Alturas and Klamath Falls). They had to wait because due to the track configuration at Fernley, they block the main line while backing the train into the Nevada Cement plant.

Notice the snow on the Pah-Rah Mountains beyond the train in the distance. Snow is nearly down to the valley floor at this time, and from the clouds, it looks like there is more on the way.

I'm not much better even after a lot of sleep. If anything, I feel worse than yesterday. However, I did get permission to knock off work today for the afternoon, so I hope to get a bit of rest.

I'm relieved that I did get my own Hugo Award nominating ballots filled out and submitted last night. Tonight at 23:59 Pacific Daylight Time is the deadline.

And it's snowing again now. Glad I don't have to go anywhere. Sure hope things clear up by Sunday as forecast. I-80 has been periodically closed due to whiteout conditions and accidents, and even when it's open, maximum chains are required.
