Psst! Hey Little Girl, Would You Like a Ribbon?

Lisa sent me out to the Subway sandwich shop around the corner from the hotel while she took a bath. While I waited in line, the little girl in front of me started eying my long string of ribbons (currently 17). According to the woman with her (her mother?), she only spoke German, a language I can't speak at all. The little girl was fascinated with the ribbons, and reached out and ran her hand over them (with my permission and encouragement). She pointed out some of the pictures and English words for them. I thought it was very cute.

They got their sandwiches and sat down. As I was paying for mine, I found one ribbon I had that I hadn't yet applied to my string. So as I left the shop, I stopped and gave it to her. She seemed very happy. I walked back to the hotel with more of a spring in my step, despite my feet being awash in blisters.

It's nice when you can make a child happy with something so simple.

I took Mum and her partner out for xmas dinner in the local pub last year and they gave us crackers. When we pulled them, the presents inside were the usual, pack of cards, mini screwdriver kit (never knock these, just the right size for fiddly little screws) and a rubber snake head which went on your finger, to quite realistic effect.

There was a little boy on the next table so Mum leant over and gave him the snake toy and he spent the whole of dinner playing quietly with it, he was still playing when we left.
I wonder how many expensive presents he got that year and if he played with any of them with the absorbtion he showed to 6cm of rubber snake?

At the end of the con, I gave a little girl in the Marriott elevator (she was 2-3) one of Arisia's "Clue" ribbons off my strip.

My worst was Interthingy 1, where I had ribbons from my shoulder to my ankle. I've thought of making a curtain or quilt--I save all the old badges (& ribbons).
