I have already received a reply from the park supervisor to my complaint against the staff member at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. I will start by sharing the entire reply. Aside from including the attached document as a link to where you can download it (at least I hope the link that Google Docs says anyone on the internet can view works) and removing extra carriage returns, I have not modified the reply in any way.

Hello Mr. Standlee,

I witnessed the entire event yesterday and I can assure you we are following guidelines set forth by the Division. Attached are the exemptions for park employees and at no time did our staff member get within 6 feet of you or your wife. For your information, Berlin is quite busy especially on holiday weekends. The park hosted over 50 vehicles just yesterday alone.

When working outside staff members are not required to wear face coverings as long as distancing measures are taken. The staff member involved was there to assist visitors with information regarding the park activities during these trying times and to assure collection of park fees. It is always unfortunate when folks have a bad experience at Berlin, but I can tell you it wasn't due to my employees not following protocol.

I also don't appreciate your actions endangering my employee with your exhibition of speed and throwing rocks with your vehicle's tires. Most conflict can be settled with simple communication, but your hasty exit endangered my employee and park property. I will be forwarding this email and my response to our Region Manager. If you would like to further discuss the issue please contact me.

Here's what I say about this.

1. It is physically impossible to stay more than six feet away if your job involves blocking access to the payment kiosk and also coming right up to an arriving vehicle and handing them a payment envelope through their car window. In addition, I know from personal experience that one can collect park fees without having to be within six feet of someone because I've paid them more than once at other parks with nobody around at all.

2. The only reason that the employee never got within six feet of us was that when he made it clear that he wasn't going to wear a mask and was going to keep coming toward us, we backed up, and quickly, too, because he presented a danger to us. If the park supervisor is more worried about gravel than viruses, it says a lot about their attitude. If you're going to task someone to do this, you should be treating them like the person at a drive-through take-out window, and they're required to wear face coverings to protect themselves and their customers.

3. Regarding "Most conflict can be settled with simple communication," I pointed out to him that us pointing to our face masks and him shaking his head and saying, "Can't" is pretty darn simple and pretty clear: they don't care.

BISP looks like an interesting place, but now I not only don't want to visit it, but I will actively discourage anyone from going there until and unless they apologize and require park employees who are going to interact with the public to protect themselves and the public.

While yes, outdoors *with distancing* does not require a mask, if he walks up to your car, he isn't distancing, QED. He needs a mask or equivalent if he wants to get close to you. You are perfectly within your rights to either insist he wear a mask or remove yourselves *at speed* from his attempt to contaminate you.

His worrying more about a little gravel than the health of both his employee and guests is telling: He doesn't take the pandemic seriously.

If the employee "can't" (which I doubt) wear a face mask, a clear face shield is an adequate substitute. He probably is one of those covidiots thinking that ADA and "HIPPA" exempt him from masking.

You reacted properly to the threat of an unmasked idiot coming up to your car. I personally wouldn't want to touch anything the guy handled.

The supervisor is in full bullshit CYA mode. Escalate.

I agree. If the employee is unable to wear a mask for medical reasons, he should be assigned to a job which does not require him to interact with the public at all. Perhaps emptying the park's trash cans.
