In retrospect, when my flight arrived at PDX twenty minutes early last night, I would have been better off staying at the airport for an extra half hour or more, maybe checking e-mail or something like that. Instead, I claimed my luggage and hopped on light rail out to the Parkrose/Sumner Light Rail station. Lisa, however, not only did not know I was running absurdly early, but was also stuck in a huge traffic snarl on I-205. Every few minutes, I called on the 2-meter ham radio, but the range of the handheld units is not good. Eventually she picked up my signal and explained that she was creeping along at no better than walking speed. ("I wish I could pedal this thing," she said, "It would save gas.")

By and by she escaped the clutches of I-205 and drove into the light rail station and picked me up. We headed over to 82nd Avenue (the freeway was still in progress both directions, even after 7 PM, which it was), and drove down to Bon Teriyaki, where we had dinner as we often have done on these trips. Thus reinforced, we headed south with a short detour to Whole Foods where we could get good cheese (Lisa often complaining about the lack of Venezuelan Beaver Cheese) and then on to Salem, where we picked up more groceries from WinCo before finally going home to Mehama. Both of us were pretty tired for different reasons, and we went to bed shortly after putting away the groceries and unpacking my luggage.

Today's plan was to go shopping in Salem for new slacks for Lisa; however, with a storm expected to move in soon and Saturday dawning fairly clear (but cold), Lisa decided to change the schedule and get some of the yard work done while the weather was good. Beware: Many photos behind the cuts below.

After fighting with the foliage, it was time for a quick but satisfying lunch and then cleaning up before heading into Salem for the originally-scheduled shopping expedition. Given that it started raining while were in Salem, we can feel pretty good about having properly prioritized our tasks. We really don't think it would a good idea to be using the electric chainsaw in the rain. *zap*
