I listen to KCBS (San Francisco all-news radio station) on the Audacy app in the mornings while I'm getting ready for the day. They localize ads, sometimes with hilarious results (like when it was serving up ads for a Portland, Oregon car dealership). For the past week or so, though, I was impressed that it was serving up an add that was localized for Lyon County, Nevada, where I live. That's pretty specialized! There's also one for a regional health service serving Carson City and Washoe, Storey, Churchill, and Lyon Counties, which is a little less surprising.

You happened to hit upon something that I do not like. I'm a "BCB DXer" -- a life-long long distance broadcast band radio listener (on the AM band, mostly at night, but today's electronic interference makes that difficult if not impossible). Having the luxury of just about any radio station from anywhere on the Internet is fun...BUT...part of my listening enjoyment used to include the ads from the station of license. Due to copyright issues, such ads are rarely played over the Internet. (For the station, that introduces a new revenue stream online, too.) But it eliminates the opportunity to listen to those far-away commercials. I know I am not the only one who has this hobby, but I also realize we're in a small percentage *and* our wishes don't earn any profits for anyone so there's no use whining. Nevertheless...whine.

As a kid I was a regular listener to KGO down in the San Francisco Bay Area, which was pretty good considering I was living near Salem Oregon. Alas, the days of KGO being interesting talk radio are behind us.
