Double Busy
Nov. 20th, 2010 11:59 pmBesides being consumed with a project from work that absolutely must be done in the next couple of days, I had a long SFSFC Board of Directors meeting today. We got off on the wrong foot when technical difficulties led to us starting almost an hour late. The place where we meet has taken out their land telephone line, so we can no longer connect our speaker phone. It's a very rare SFSFC meeting where we don't have several people dialing in. It took a lot of fussing around to get the meeting going. I actually had to quickly run back over to my house and get my webcam (which I wouldn't ordinarily carry around with me) to connect to my laptop computer so we could use my computer as a speakerphone on Skype. (The meeting room has good wi-fi connections.) This is something that, had I know about the problems in advance, I could have relatively easily dealt with by showing up early with the necessary hardware and getting it set up before most people arrived, rather than having to do it while the clock ticks away and people are calling the conference bridge and wondering where the meeting host is.
(Yes, I know you can do conferencing within Skype. I've done it. But not everyone who needed to attend today's call had access to a computer and as Skype account, but they did have mobile phones, so they dialed in to an ordinary conference-call bridge and I called the same bridge from Skype. At some time in the future when all of the participants have the right software and hardware we can do this as a real-time video conference, but a dial-in conference call is sufficient for now.)
SFSFC had a fairly long agenda today, and we did not get done until after 4 PM. Nothing really earth-shattering, but we have a lot of irons in the fire, and it takes time to work through all of them. Because of work pressures, it will take me a while (probably not until after SMOFCon) to get everything straightened out, but for the moment, I did get next year's tentative meeting schedule posted. I also did some updates to the SMOFCon 28 web site on account of our room block has expired and you can no longer reserve rooms at our discounted rate. I'd do even more, but I have to get back to work. Thank goodness I can do it from home and don't have to drive over to San Mateo this weekend.
