Road Day

Tuesday morning I drove the Foglios up to San Francisco (via I-280 because it's a prettier drive), then went back to San Jose. Lisa and packed our stuff into my van (it fit, amazingly), drove to San Mateo, spread the load between our two vans, and set out for Reno. We got to Reno around 9:30 PM. Fortunately, even in its current reduced state (with many casino restaurants going dark mid-week), one can easily find places where you can have a good meal at 11 PM, which we did.

We've decided to not set an alarm tomorrow morning. We're not planning to be in Fernley until Thursday anyway. We need the rest. And having breakfast in mid-afternoon is easy here in Reno.

I think Chris Garcia has summed up much with which I agree in his Facebook post about the Westercon 66 Site Selection. I particularly like how he makes an analogy between how bids are working these days and the way tennis evolved over the years. I have too few brain cycles left available to comment further, but I recommend that anyone interested in Westercon site selection, particularly as a potential bidder, go read what Chris said.

I was able to sleep in a little this morning because we didn't have to be anywhere at a specific time. At Lisa's suggestion, we drove over to John Ascuaga's Nugget for breakfast because she likes their seafood omelet. It was pretty good. Then we drove down to the self-storage place near the Peppermill and put the Tsuki Systems gear into their smallest size of storage closet after renting the space for a couple of months. (We figure that after Renovation, we'll move it to storage in Fernley if we haven't found a place there yet.)

We went back to the hotel and rested for a while. It doesn't sound like we'd worked that hard, but we're still drained from Westercon, so it doesn't take much to wear us out. We took Lisa's vehicle with the rest of the Tsuki gear down to the locker and put it away as well, then went to the laundromat we'd noticed on Virginia Street about 2 km north of the Atlantis. While waiting for the clothes to wash, I wrote about the laundromat on the Renovation LJ.

By the time we got back to the hotel it was too late for our original dinner plan, which was to go back to the Nugget for shrimp pan roast. Instead, we walked next door to the Silver Legacy and had the dinner buffet. We got there at 9 PM and they do last call at 9:30, which led to us taking far too much food as we scrambled before they closed. We ate way too much, and thus felt obliged to go for a walk up and down the casino strip, where we even had to dodge a few raindrops. It has been threatening thunderstorms all day. We didn't mind. The clouds kept the heat down a bit.

For the theoretically low-impact day of this trip, I felt pretty tired, and it's still after midnight before I'll be able to get to bed.
