As I was coming in to my "office" in the living room at Fernley House, Union Pacific's beautiful business train came roaring by. I missed the head end, but by the sound of the horns I'm guessing it was their "executive" E9s, since they don't have the same sound as more-modern units. The train looked approximately like this, including the dome and what I think was a theatre car on the back end, which is a good place to inspect the track. Now that's the way to see the country!

Shortly thereafter, a manifest freight pulled into Fernley siding. As I expected, not too long after that came the westbound California Zephyr pretty much on time. Good work by the dispatcher in keeping the passenger train on time while still managing to expedite the train full of VIPs, which probably has priority over everything. It probably doesn't hurt that both the Amtrak and business trains are short enough to fit into the relatively short sidings to the east of Fernley.
