Too Much Security
Feb. 1st, 2012 07:10 pmI logged into the US Treasury system tonight to try and get a copy of the 1099 for the savings bonds I cashed last year so I could do my income taxes. Besides an annoying-complex password-entry system that I wonder how they consider ADA compliant, it asked me a challenge question to which I must have misspelled the answer, because after the third attempt it locked me out of my account. I'm glad I have Skype, because unlocking the account means calling an East Coast phone number during their business hours (6 AM to 4:30 PM Eastern time, weekdays), leaving a message then (it won't let you leave a message off hours; it hangs up on you), and waiting for someone to get around to unlocking your account, which I know from past experience can take days.
Okay, yes, this is my savings bond account I'm talking about, but they've imposed so much security as to make it almost unusable unless I do unsecure things.
