While I wait for my laundry to dry so I can pack for the trip, I have a chance to close a few tabs. A few days ago, I wrote about Grate Thyme Kitchen, the new restaurant that has opened in Fernley a few blocks from our house. I mentioned at the time their "Scottish Bread," and several people asked what that was. We went by a couple of days later and bought a couple of the rolls to have at teatime that afternoon.

I've never heard of Scottish biscuits myself )

They're pretty good rolls. Although billed as "breakfast bread," we had them that afternoon and thought they went well with tea and jam as well.

In The Box

Last week I discussed the repainting and refurbishing of the wood box that Lisa built to hold 3/4 cord of firewood on the front side of the house. (The rest gets stored behind the house, but we wanted a box with easier access to the front door.) Having been rushed last year as the weather closed in, Lisa knocked together a wood box from 2x4s, 2x6s, and plywood, but didn't have time to paint it. Fortunately, with so little rain, things don't rot in Fernley in a single season if left unpainted. This summer and fall, Lisa emptied the box and has been painting it in stages, both to protect the wood and to make the box look better and fit in with the color of the house. Some parts of the work needed my help, not to paint, but to help wrangle wood and materials that are difficult for a single person to shift.

The wood box is one more element that makes Fernley House look more lived in. Considering that it sat vacant for over a year, we want to do everything we can to re-establish the house's reputation as an inhabited building.
