Wind & Fire: Not a Good Mix
Apr. 10th, 2018 02:50 pmThere's been a substantial brush/structure fire here in Fernley about 1 km east of our house, on the other side of the railroad tracks. Multiple alarms, with mutual support called in from surrounding districts. From the radio traffic, it appears to have been a permitted controlled burn that got out of control. Given that there were high wind warnings up for quite a while and that the wind was whipping around pretty badly this afternoon, I'm amazed that anyone through it was safe to do any burning at all. The first units are still on scene and the fire command has not yet been terminated as I write this, but it sounds like things are mostly under control now. I hope nobody was hurt.
The biggest takeaway I have from this fire was the North Lyon County crew on the scene calling to dispatch and saying anxiously, "We need more people!"
