End of the Road for Memphis
Oct. 18th, 2021 03:22 pmLast night, the Memphis in 2023 Worldcon bid issued an announcement that they were folding the bid to host Worldcon 81.
I was an early supporter at a fairly high level of the Memphis bid, and was attached to their committee as a WSFS advisor. (This reduces times when I had to be careful to not leak information from one place to another due to having privileged information. I knew the Memphis withdrawal was coming a few days before it was announced, for example, but couldn't tell the Winnipeg bid this.) I feel bad for the bid's leadership, as I know that challenges of bidding for Worldcon and they were doubled and redoubled in the time of COVID.
As I am also on the Winnipeg in 2023 committee as their WSFS advisor, my "official double agent" role ends; however, I will still recuse myself from presiding over the portion of the Business Meeting that handles site selection business. I think I'll wear my Canadian flag tie at the Saturday WSFS Business Meeting (where site selection business happens) to make that even more clear.
