Going to Print
Jun. 4th, 2022 05:12 pmFrom our experience printing Westercon 74 Progress Report 5, we knew that the cover of the Souvenir Book would be the most time-consuming part of the job. Because it's printed on heavier stock, you have to set the printer to matte paper so it will feed more slowly and not jam. Even with the relatively easy U-shaped paper path of this printer, it's still possible to jam that heavy paper. Because as it happens, one side of the cover has no page numbers (both the inside front and back covers, which are both on the same side of the same sheet, are advertisements that are already locked down), I could start printing that today, so I did.
After getting about half of the covers done, I determined that we were going to run out of ink, even though I'd bought extra. So I stopped the job at the halfway point so we'd still have some ink for smaller jobs, and we'll continue with the job after I am able to buy more color ink. Black ink isn't the problem; we still have three extra-large black cartridges. In particular, thanks to the colors being printed, I'm going to probably need to buy several more magenta cartridges and maybe a couple more yellow and blue. It's still cheaper than jobbing it out based on our price quotes, but cheaper doesn't mean cheap. Fortunately, we still have some time left.
Yes, I've been buying XL cartridges. I knew we'd need a lot of ink, but I still under-estimated. Maybe if I buy more than we end up using, I can return the unopened boxes after the convention.
I would have gone to Reno and bought more cartridges today, but I still do not have the Astro back from the AC shop. I wish I'd realized that it would take this long and that I should have taken it to them back in, say, February. In any event, if it's ready to be collected sometime this coming week, we can drive the Rolling Stone, trade vehicles, then go to Staples and buy more ink cartridges.
