I was one of the two people on the first programming item at SMOFCon on today's opening day: What was originally billed as a workshop about How to Bid for a Convention, but based on the attendees turned into more of a joint interview, with Carolina Gomez Lagerlöf and I interviewing each other about our experiences of different types of bidded conventions. Carolina has extensive knowledge of how Eurocons and other bidded conventions in Europe work, while I know a whole lot about Worldcon and Westercon bidding (which is very different from the European conventions). The audience included people like Ben Yalow and Steve Cooper, who added valuable insights. While we had two hours, we only used a little over an hour. Besides a dozen or so in-person attendees, we had at least three or four (it was difficult to tell from our vantage point) online attendees. Carolina and I thought it went well, and we had people thank us for it later.

I didn't attend any of the other programming today because I stuck around in the Hospitality Suite, sometimes being the committee-member-in-charge when others had to run off to programming or errands. In the evening, I went with some of the senior management of Pemmi-Con for a meeting and a meal. By the time I got back from that, I was so tired that I could only make a token appearance back in Hospitality before heading for bed. For various reasons, I have both an early start and a late finish tomorrow. I'll be recording (after having been trained by Lisa, who is still on committee as "Camera Trainer") the Worldcon and SMOFCon bid Q&A (and the SMOFCon site selection, where we have to decide between a bid from Stockholm and one from Providence, Rhode Island), and then later from seated Worldcons. After that, assuming we get the minimum of ten participants willing to pay the CA$20 fee, will be the Probability and Statistics Seminar. It's apt to be a late night tomorrow. I'm looking at spots in Saturday's schedule where I might be able to grab a nap for an hour or two.
