kevin_standlee: (To Trains)
Yesterday morning got off to a very bad start for reasons I need not go into. After dealing with those things, Lisa said, "Can we go for a drive?"

I told her that would be fine, but where did she want to go, and she said, "Carson City." So to Carson City we went.

Our family membership to the Nevada State Railroad Museum expires at the end of April (we will send a renewaly this coming week), so admission for us was free. The Museum is starting a renovation and expansion, and I took no pictures other than a few of the large map of the Pacific Railroad that covers the floor of the main exhibit hall, showing in this case Fernley and the area around it. Gray lines are of railroads built after the completion of the original line in 1869. You can see that Fernley wasn't actually on the original line, but was added after the 1904 line relocation. The right of way of the original line is a bit north of town, and we've been out there a couple of times, We expect to do an episode of Railway Legends, Myths, and Stories about this someday.

Some of you may recall me talking about some of the Nevada State Railroad Museum having loaned some of its equipment to the California State Railroad Museum. This includes a couple of Virginia & Truckee Railroad locomotives that are part of the CSRM collection and are now displayed in Carson City.

After our museum visit, we went to Mills Park in Carson City to have a look at another railroad that we've seen from a distance many times, as the road from the east (formerly US-50) to downtown runs right past the park.

A little railroad in Carson City )

We walked most of the track. It looks nice. This and other similar railroads might make for a future RLMS episode.

Rather than return home the way we came (US-95A and US-50), we did a circular trip, heading north to Reno via New Washoe City (east of Washoe Lake, and avoiding I-580/US-395), then going to Raley's to buy the refrigerated items that we'd skipped on Friday on account of my having forgot to pack the coolers with the ice packs. I'd remember to bring one with me on Saturday, so we could finish our Friday grocery shopping. Once we'd done that, it was home via I-80.

So while Saturday started badly, it ended well. Someday we will find a weekend when we can come out to Mills Park and ride the train as well.
