Racing the Storm
Jan. 6th, 2024 06:28 pmWe wanted to get major grocery shopping done, but there was a snowstorm heading our way forecast to arrive sometime in the afternoon. So I set my alarm for my weekday 4:30 AM time, and we set out to Reno about 5:30 AM. WinCo Foods is open 24 hours and we did a major stock-up. We got home around 8 AM, unloaded the groceries, and Lisa turned in for some rest, while I worked on some Westercon business about which I'll talk later but that should not be a surprise to anyone who follows me regularly. I also popped out for some milk and to collect the mail from the post office, as the day grew more and more gloomy.
As forecast, high winds moved in for several hours. Fortunately, I'd already done all of the outside errands, including getting the inside wood box filled up. The fireplace kept the cold at bay, and I listened to the wind howl.
( Then Came the Snow )
At one point, while we were sweeping snow, the wind, which had calmed considerably, rose back up again to near-whiteout conditions and we retreated indoors. Eventually the snow tapered off after dropping around 3 cm on the porch rail, which is our measuring point.
This was a smallish storm. The 10-day forecast suggests that we should expect a much larger storm in about a week. We'll keep watching the forecast. In the meantime, we're happy that we timed our supply runs so that when the wind and snow moved in, we could stay warm and well fed.
