Closing the Circle
Jul. 23rd, 2024 09:18 amOnce I got Lisa's travel sorted for her European trip so that she can get home, I turned my attention to getting me home. I'm very glad that I was relying upon United miles to get home, because the one-way flight LHR-DEN-RNO would have cost more than $3200! Using points, it was only around $250 in fees and seat up-charges because the seat I wanted was in an area of Economy that costs an extra $60.
I do end up with a relatively long layover at Denver (5 1/2 hours), but that does mean I won't have to rush around the airport getting between flights. That connecting flight to Reno is so lightly loaded that United offered a first-class upgrade for only $89, which seemed worthwhile to me, so I took it.
There was complexity when I first tried to book this yesterday, however. United's website said the charge did not go through. I tried again and got the same message. So at that point I had no reservation and two pending charges on my Amex card. I was up early this morning, tried again, and this time everything worked. I expect the two other pending charges to expire and revert, but if they don't, I'm sure Amex will be able to sort it out.
So both Lisa and my Worldcon travel plans for our respective out-and-back trips (which diverge after Glasgow) are complete. There are individual side trips for both of us, but in general, we expect to be able to get there and get back.
I'm glad to have gotten this settled. Leaving for Worldcon, which we do on Thursday, without having a confirmed reservation to get home was starting to gnaw on my mind.
