The "Guaranteed to Pass" gas treatment failed me, so I want a refund. Not surprisingly, they don't make it simple. You have to mail (no on-line method) a letter to them asking for the application form, then fill out the form and attach a copy of the receipts showing that you purchased it, you failed the test, and how much you spent on repairs. Then maybe someday they'll send me the $10 I spent on it.

I mailed the letter asking for the refund and the application to the California state government for smog-repair financial assistance today. Hope they turn around the application relatively quickly. I don't like sitting on this and risking my vehicle registration running out.

If you mail your registration fees on or before the postmark deadline, even without the smog certification, you cover the penalty problem.

The DMV will then dun you for the smog cert before they'll send you the tags.

However -- having mailed the money on time makes it legal to drive it even if you haven't received the tags yet, so law enforcement typically will not cite you for expired tags for a couple months after they show expiration.

Even if the state doesn't turn around your application quickly, you can still pay your registration and get a temporary window sticker to show that you have paid, but haven't passed smog. Just walk into your local DMV with the failed smog test paperwork, pay the registration, and request a temporary sticker.

That way your registration is still paid on time, you have more time to pass the smog test, and you won't get a ticket.

Fortunately for me, there is a DMV office near where I live. Thank you! Now I don't feel nearly so bad for waiting for the smog program thing. Although I could pay the money for the repairs without the assistance program, I don't see why I should do so when the program is there.

Would you believe an oil change is often all you need to pass the smog test? Not sure about the science, but several mechanics have confirmed this for me.
